The Phillies are dipping back into the waiver wire for bullpen help, and this time they’ve landed a familiar veteran arm.
Philadelphia claimed right-handed pitcher José Urquidy off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com on X. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Phillies transferred right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian to the 60-day injured list, which likely ends his 2026 season.
The move comes with the Phillies trying to patch together the pitching staff for the final stretch. Starter Jesús Luzardo has landed on the injured list and is effectively done for the regular season, which leaves more of the load on the bullpen. With just 10 games left, bullpen games could become part of the routine.
Urquidy was designated for assignment by Chicago on Sept. 15 after the White Sox recalled left-hander Noah Schultz. If he appears in a game for Philadelphia, the Phillies will be his third team of the season.
He opened 2026 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and struggled badly there, posting a -0.6 bWAR over five appearances and 6.1 innings while carrying an 8.53 ERA. Even so, his 4.20 FIP suggested the raw numbers may have been harsher than the underlying performance.
After Chicago picked him up in a trade ahead of the deadline on July 26, sending right-hander Felix Doroteo back to Pittsburgh, Urquidy looked more like the version the Phillies may be hoping to use. In six appearances, including one start, he worked 22.2 innings with a 4.37 ERA and 0.3 bWAR. That kind of multi-inning profile could make him useful if Philadelphia wants someone who can help cover innings rather than just handle one frame at a time.
There’s also some postseason experience in the background. Urquidy has pitched in the playoffs as both a starter and reliever, and he won a World Series with the Houston Astros in 2022. His only appearance in that series came against the Phillies, when he tossed three shutout innings.
For now, the question is how the Phillies plan to use him. He hasn’t pitched for the White Sox since Sept. 8, so he arrives as a fresh option at a time when Philadelphia is looking for any workable arm it can find. The club also has Nestor Cortes, who signed a Major League deal a few weeks ago, adding another name to the late-season mix.
