Philly's NFC East Path Just Got MUCH Tougher

As the Cowboys boost their secondary ahead of a pivotal clash with the Eagles, the addition of Joey Porter Jr. raises questions about whether the gamble will pay off in their quest for NFC dominance.

The Cowboys have gone hunting for help in a hurry, and the Eagles are the team most directly staring at the ripple effect.

Dallas is finalizing a trade for Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., according to The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero late Wednesday night. ESPN’s Jane Slater reported the Cowboys are sending a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick to Pittsburgh to get it done.

Porter’s arrival fits the kind of all-in move Dallas has been willing to make when it thinks a window is open. The Cowboys are 1-2 after a last-second loss to the Ravens in Week 3, a game that ended with Baltimore getting into position for a game-winning 56-yard field goal after Dallas allowed a 27-yard catch with seconds left. Instead of waiting around, they’re trying to patch the secondary now.

That secondary needed the attention. The Cowboys had already made a handful of smaller moves earlier this week by signing defensive backs to the practice squad, but Porter is obviously a much bigger swing.

The trade also comes with a contract wrinkle. Porter and the Steelers couldn’t reach an agreement on an extension, and there’s no guarantee he’ll land a new deal in Dallas. The move is about the present first.

Porter, a former Penn State standout and the 2023 second-round pick, has already built a reputation as one of the NFL’s best young cornerbacks. In three seasons with Pittsburgh, he put up 165 tackles, 31 passes defended and three interceptions.

There’s also a health note attached to the deal. Porter did not play in Pittsburgh’s first three games of the 2026 season and has been on the injury report with a back injury. Still, the contract situation appears to have been part of the story behind his absence.

For Dallas, this is another reminder that Jerry Jones is willing to chase a big in-season fix when he thinks it can move the needle. The Cowboys did something similar last season when they acquired All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams before the trade deadline.

Porter gives first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker a major new piece to work with. Parker, of course, used to coach the Eagles’ defensive backs.

Even with Porter in the fold, though, Dallas still has a glaring problem that one cornerback won’t solve by himself. The Cowboys rank second-worst in the league against the run, giving up 539 rushing yards through three games.

So the move changes the conversation, but not the whole picture. The real test comes when the Cowboys try to use this new-look defense to chase the Eagles in the NFC East and, beyond that, the automatic playoff spot that comes with the division crown. The teams will meet again in Dallas on Thanksgiving.

Andrew Painter Just Changed The Phillies Biggest Playoff Fear

When the Phillies needed a steady arm in the biggest pressure spot of their Wild Card Series, Don Mattingly turned to rookie Andrew Painter in relief during extra innings of Game 2 against the Braves. Painter responded with three scoreless innings, and the Phillies rode that effort to a 4-3 win that sent them on to the next round, a result that did more than just keep their October alive.

Painters outing also offered something Philadelphia has been searching for this postseason: a little more confidence in the back end of games. Along the way, several key pitch calls went his way after challenges were overturned, adding to the sense that the night kept bending toward the Phillies, even before the final out was recorded. Braves Have One Power Threat To Watch In Winner Take All Game

The Phillies and Braves are headed into a winner-take-all Game 3 in the wild card round, and the home run swings that have already shaped the series are part of the backdrop. Both lineups have shown they can change the game in a hurry, and with a trip to the NLDS on the line, any mistake in the strike zone could carry a lot more weight than usual.

For Philadelphia, Kyle Schwarber remains the obvious middle-of-the-order threat to watch, while Atlantas Drake Baldwin has also emerged as a name to keep on the radar based on recent power production. The pitching matchup has not been announced yet, which only adds to the uncertainty, but it also means the kind of one-swing impact both clubs have already shown is still very much in play. Braves Fans Have One Big Reason To Watch Phillies In Game 3

The Phillies have turned this series into exactly the sort of October test they wanted after winning their final regular-season game just to get here. Alec Bohm and Bryce Harper have already supplied important power and timely production, and Philadelphia has found enough offense to keep pace with Atlanta as the NL Wild Card Series has tightened into a bullpen-heavy chess match.

Game 3 now shifts the spotlight to Aaron Nola, with the Phillies leaning on him to stabilize the night while the relief corps waits behind him, including Alex McFarlane and Jhoan Duran. Atlanta is expected to go with an opener and then piece together the rest with relievers who have already been used in the series, which leaves this one feeling like the kind of matchup where every inning can change the tenor of the whole night.
