Phillies Test Shock Roles That Could Change Harper Future

Phillies consider a surprising shake-up by testing Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber in new roles amid early-season struggles and defensive concerns.

Is Bryce Harper still among the elite? That's the question lingering around the Philadelphia Phillies as the 2026 season kicks off.

Harper, a two-time MVP, hasn't had the best start, hitting a mere .100/.182/.100 over the first five games. His defensive metrics aren't doing him any favors either, with -2 Defensive Runs Saved. It's understandable that the Phillies are exploring other options at first base, given Harper's drop from his stellar 2024 performance.

What's surprising is the Phillies' choice for a potential replacement. Enter Kyle Schwarber, who’s been spotted taking grounders at first base.

Now, this isn't entirely new territory for Schwarber. The Phillies dabbled with this idea last spring, but he hasn't played first base in a regular season game since his 2021 stint with the Boston Red Sox. His defensive record there isn't glowing, with -3 DRS over 75 innings, but his offensive firepower often compensates for his defensive lapses.

While contingency plans are always wise, Harper's struggles aren't catastrophic. His early-season slump might be concerning, but he’s refining his approach at the plate, and there's hope his numbers will improve as the season progresses.

Switching positions might not be the magic fix for Harper’s bat. Although his prime numbers as a right fielder were remarkable, his career OPS as a first baseman (.873) and as a designated hitter (.883) are quite similar.

On the other hand, Schwarber thrives when focusing solely on hitting. His career OPS as a DH is .875, but it drops to .837 when he plays in the field.

With both Harper and Schwarber commanding significant salaries-$55 million AAV combined over the next five years-the Phillies need to tread carefully. These are two of their lineup's most crucial hitters, and a drastic position change should be a last resort. Patience might be the best play here, allowing both players to settle into their roles before making any big moves.
