The Phillies are heading toward the trade deadline with clear needs and a farm system that may have to pay the price.
Dave Dombrowski and Philadelphia are expected to be aggressive buyers this summer, and the list of holes is easy to spot: rotation, bullpen and outfield. That kind of shopping list usually means parting with real prospect value, and Matt Gelb of The Athletic says one name stands above the rest as the most likely to be moved - Ramon Marquez.
Gelb described Marquez as the kind of arm the Phillies have been willing to deal before. "Marquez fits the mold of prospect the Phillies have dealt at past deadlines; a pop-up starting pitching who has considerable development time still ahead," Gelb writes.
That doesn’t mean rival clubs are sleeping on him. Gelb also noted that "Marquez grades well on rival teams' models, according to analysts with several teams who were granted anonymity to speak freely."
The 20-year-old right-hander has climbed quickly through Philadelphia’s system and is now one of the organization’s most valuable prospects. He owns a 2.02 ERA in 10 games, including nine starts, this season. His work has been split between levels as well, with a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings over four starts at High-A and a .186 ERA in 29 innings at Single-A.
The strikeout numbers jump off the page, too. Marquez has piled up 76 strikeouts in 49 innings this season, and he’s paired that with just 17 walks. That combination gives him the profile of a starter with real upside and plenty of room to keep rising.
For the Phillies, though, that upside may be exactly what makes him so valuable in trade talks. If they want help now, especially for a roster that needs reinforcements in multiple spots, they may have to give up one of their best young arms to get it.
Marquez has become a fan favorite, and there’s obvious appeal in watching him develop into a big-league starter. But with his value at a high point and Philadelphia looking for impact help, he could end up being the piece that brings back the kind of player who changes the club’s World Series outlook this season.
