Phillies Stun Fans With Bold Roster Moves Ahead of Opening Day

Revamped and ready, the Phillies unveil a dynamic Opening Day roster featuring fresh talent and strategic shifts, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.

Phillies Finalize Opening Day Roster with Fresh Faces and Promising Talent

The Phillies wrapped up their spring training in Clearwater, Fla., with some intriguing roster decisions, setting the stage for an exciting season. With 11 new faces on the 26-man roster compared to last year's Opening Day, the team is embracing change and potential.

The bullpen is notably lefty-heavy, featuring Kyle Backhus and Tim Mayza, while Zach Pop secured his spot with a solid spring performance. Rafael Marchán will back up star catcher J.T.

Realmuto, leaving Garrett Stubbs' future uncertain. Veteran utility player Dylan Moore adds depth to the bench.

Orion Kerkering will start the season on the injured list due to a lingering hamstring issue, aiming for an April 7 return.

The Phillies were clear about wanting rookies Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford on the roster from the get-go. Both delivered impressive performances in spring training, making their inclusion a no-brainer.

Crawford, at just 22, is set to start in center field on Opening Day. Phillies’ president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, praised Crawford’s defensive prowess and offensive contributions, highlighting his speed and enthusiasm as key assets.

Painter, who turns 23 soon, will take the mound for the fifth game of the season. Dombrowski lauded Painter’s velocity and breaking pitches, noting his ability to mix a sweeper, slider, and changeup with his high-speed fastball.

Joining Crawford, Painter, Moore, Backhus, Mayza, and Pop are newcomers Jhoan Duran, Brad Keller, Jonathan Bowlan, and Otto Kemp. Only José Alvarado and Tanner Banks return from last year's bullpen.

Backhus, acquired from the Diamondbacks, and Mayza, who signed a $1.75 million contract, stood out this spring. Mayza’s deal includes a clause allowing roster flexibility early in the season. Meanwhile, Zach McCambley returns to the Marlins after spring struggles, and Chase Shugart, despite a mixed performance, heads to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The Phillies will adjust their 40-man roster, adding Crawford, Moore, and Mayza while subtracting McCambley and Stubbs. They aim to find Stubbs a major-league role, but he may stay in the organization if no offers arise.

Top prospect Aidan Miller’s status remains uncertain due to back soreness. The team is cautious, ensuring his full recovery before resuming baseball activities.

Phillies’ Opening Day Roster:

  • Catchers (2): J.T. Realmuto, Rafael Marchán
  • Infielders (6): Bryce Harper, Bryson Stott, Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, Edmundo Sosa, Dylan Moore
  • Outfielders (4): Brandon Marsh, Justin Crawford, Adolis García, Otto Kemp
  • Designated Hitter (1): Kyle Schwarber

With a blend of youth and experience, the Phillies are poised to bring energy and excitement to the new season. Fans can expect dynamic play and plenty of fresh talent as the team looks to make its mark.
