The Phillies’ 10-4 loss to the Nationals ended with the scoreline, but the real concern came when Derek Hill crashed into the Citizens Bank Park wall on a play in center field.
Hill went after a ball near the wall in the top of the 11th and hit head first into it, sending the ball bouncing off and rolling toward right field. The collision came right after Philadelphia had tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th, and it stopped play long enough for Phillies trainers to check on him.
Hill was eventually able to get back to his feet and walk off with the trainers, but the injury overshadowed what had been a productive night for him. He scored a run, stole his 12th base of the season, and was part of the rally that pulled Philadelphia even. Hill took third base and later scored on a Trea Turner sacrifice fly toward right field to make it 4-4.
Washington then broke the tie during the sequence that followed Hill’s collision. CJ Abrams put the Nationals ahead by blasting the 82 miles per hour knuckle curve ball for two runs.

From there, the Nats kept adding on. Miles Mikolas laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought Abrams home, Andres Chapparo doubled to left field and drove in two more Washington runs, and Nasim Nunez followed with a sacrifice ground ball toward the short stop that sent in two additional Nationals.
Philadelphia dropped to 61-54, but the biggest question after the game was Hill’s health.
