A new lawsuit is putting FanDuel’s treatment of one of its biggest bettors under the microscope, and Bryce Harper’s name has landed right in the middle of it.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pennsylvania bettor Terry Thompson says he lost $1.5 million wagering through FanDuel and that the sportsbook kept encouraging him to bet even as signs of a gambling problem mounted. Thompson’s claims are part of a broader lawsuit filed earlier this year by Thompson and Christopher Sage, which accuses FanDuel, DraftKings and the NFL of contributing to their gambling addictions.
The most eye-catching detail in the report is how Thompson says FanDuel handled him. Rather than treating him like a standard customer, the sportsbook allegedly assigned him a VIP host and showered him with perks that included Super Bowl tickets, bottles of champagne and other rewards usually reserved for top spenders.
One of those rewards reportedly came in the form of a personalized video from Harper. In the message, the Phillies star wished Thompson and his family a happy Thanksgiving and greeted Thompson’s young son by name.
The video itself is not alleged to have broken any law or MLB rule, but it has still drawn sharp criticism from gambling experts. Sports betting researcher Danny Funt told The Philadelphia Inquirer he had never heard of an active player recording a personalized message for a sportsbook customer in that kind of setting.
Patrick Mahomes’ agent, Leigh Steinberg, was even more blunt. “It’s not good for your brand,” Steinberg said. “It’s exploitative.”
The situation is especially striking given that Harper has previously spoken out against gambling because of his Mormon faith.

Phillies Just Made Another Telling Outfield Decision
The Phillies have spent much of this season trying to keep their outfield depth intact, and the churn has now reached Triple-A Lehigh Valley. With Adolis Garcia and Johan Rojas both on the injured list, the organization has already had to shuffle pieces around and bring in help, including Derek Hill, while also giving Gabriel Rincones Jr. a look in right field.
Carlsons stint in the system never really got going at the plate, which made his path even tougher in a crowded, injury-driven situation. He managed only a .181 average with four homers and a .614 OPS in 153 plate appearances for Lehigh Valley, and the Phillies are clearly continuing to sort through which outfield options can actually hold up while the big league club waits for healthier answers. Phillies Fans Just Lost A Reunion They Were Waiting For
The All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park was already shaping up as a big night for Philadelphia, with six Phillies chosen for the midsummer showcase, including Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. It also had the feel of a reunion, since Ranger Suarez was selected too, setting up a return to the ballpark where he spent his first eight big league seasons and became a familiar name to Phillies fans.
Instead, that homecoming will have to wait. Suarez will miss the game, leaving one of the more appealing local storylines off the field and taking some of the edge out of a night that was supposed to bring him back to South Philly in front of the crowd that watched him grow into a fan favorite.
