Phillies Offseason Depth Just Took A Hit In One Crucial Area

As the Philadelphia Phillies enter an aggressive free agency period, they must navigate a string of minor league departures that could impact their organizational depth.

The Phillies’ offseason picture isn’t just about the big league roster. Their farm system took a hit too, with 21 minor league players now officially on the free-agent market.

That puts Philadelphia among the clubs with the most minor league free agents this winter. Only the Seattle Mariners (36), Athletics (27), Texas Rangers (25), Washington Nationals (23), San Diego Padres (23) and Detroit Tigers had more.

Across the minors, 504 players were declared free agents, and the Phillies had a sizable chunk of that group. Most of Philadelphia’s departing players came from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where 15 of the organization’s free agents spent this past season.

A few of those names even made it to the majors with Philadelphia in 2026. Steward Berroa appeared in six games when injuries thinned out the roster, with Adolis Garcia and Johan Rojas both going down for the year. Dylan Moore also got a shot as a utility option earlier in the season, playing in 16 games, but he didn’t provide much at the plate and finished with a -0.2 bWAR after going hitless in 12 at-bats.

Carter Kieboom is another notable name on the list. The former first-round pick of the Washington Nationals in 2016, taken No. 28 overall, hasn’t played in a major league game since 2025. He spent the year with the IronPigs and hit .270/.354/.388 in 107 games and 429 plate appearances.

Lou Trivino brings the most major league mileage of the group, with 337 games on his resume. After missing the 2023 and 2024 seasons because of injury, he returned to pitch in 47 games in 2025, splitting time between the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and the Phillies.

Kolby Allard also saw big league action this season, appearing in four games for the Cleveland Guardians.

The rest of the group is spread across the system, including five free agents from Double-A Reading and right-hander Giussepe Velásquez, who was with High-A Jersey Shore. The full list of Phillies minor league free agents includes right-handers Andrew Bechtold, Sam Carlson, Drake Fellows, Brian Keller, Casey Lawrence, Michael Mercado, Daniel Robert, Levi Stoudt, Lou Trivino III and Giussepe Velasquez, along with left-handers Kolby Allard and Tucker…

It’s a chunk of depth the organization will need to replace this winter, and the timing doesn’t make things any easier. With labor talks still unsettled and Dec. 2 looming as a possible lockout date, it could be a difficult market for a lot of these players to find new homes.

Phillies Have A Rare Offseason Target Who Solves Two Problems

The Phillies are already looking for ways to sharpen the roster this offseason, and Teruaki Sato has emerged as an especially intriguing name. The Japanese infielder is entering MLBs posting system after a huge season in Nippon Professional Baseball, where he captured both the Central League Triple Crown and MVP honors, and that kind of rsum naturally puts him on the radar of clubs looking for impact, not just depth.

What makes Sato stand out for Philadelphia is the fit as much as the talent. The Phillies view him as a potential power bat who could also give them short-term infield coverage and some much-needed positional flexibility while their prospects continue to develop, and unlike some of the other marquee targets they might chase, a deal would not come with draft-pick penalties attached. That combination makes him a rare offseason option for a team trying to improve without creating extra roster complications. [Read more 🡒]

Phillies Have An Odd Voice In Baseballs Most Heated Fight

Garrett Stubbs may no longer be in the Phillies clubhouse, but he still has a seat at one of baseballs most important tables. The former Philadelphia catcher is serving as the teams player representative in Major League Baseballs ongoing collective bargaining talks, keeping him involved in union meetings and voting even after being designated for assignment and moving on from the roster.

It is an unusual setup in a negotiation that has already turned contentious, especially with the proposed salary cap drawing strong resistance from the players. For the Phillies, Stubbs remains an odd but meaningful voice in a fight that could shape the sports economic future, even if his day-to-day role in Philadelphia has changed. [Read more 🡒]

Phillies Fans May Need To Slow Down On Francisco Renteria

The early buzz around Francisco Renteria has been easy to understand, especially for a 17-year-old prospect getting a chance to test himself in the Venezuelan Winter League. But the first look was rough, with Renteria managing just one hit in 17 at-bats before coming off the roster, a reminder that even the most intriguing young players can need more time before they start turning raw talent into production.

Juan Villavicencio offered a sharper contrast in the same league, and his stronger 2026 minor league season helped push him into a promotion and into the conversation among Phillies prospects. Both players remain part of the organizations longer development picture, but for now the bigger takeaway is that Renterias path looks like one that will require patience rather than instant expectations.
