Phillies Offensive Mess Could Force A Big Outfield Pursuit

Can the Phillies secure free agent Randy Arozarena to bolster their lineup after a tough 2026 season?

The Phillies have plenty to sort through this winter, and the offense sits near the top of the to-do list. In 2026, Philadelphia’s lineup never really found its footing. The group had trouble getting on base, several regulars fell short of expectations, and the outfield in particular produced at its lowest level in years.

That left a thin core carrying too much of the load. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott were the only three above-average hitters in the lineup, and that’s not nearly enough support for a team trying to piece together a more complete offense. Dave Dombrowski has work to do, especially with free agency also pulling away two important pieces in Alec Bohm and Luis Arraez.

One name that fits the Phillies’ needs is Randy Arozarena.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently ranked the 40 best free agents on the market, and Arozarena checked in as the top available MLB position player at No. 5 overall. Teruaki Sato, the international import from the Hanshin Tigers in the NPB, was the highest-ranked position player overall at No. 3.

Arozarena brings exactly the kind of right-handed pop teams keep chasing, which is why Bowden had multiple clubs in the mix for him. Philadelphia made the list, but so did Arozarena’s former team, the Seattle Mariners, plus the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds. Given his track record, that kind of attention figures to be part of the process.

His postseason résumé is already on the board. Arozarena was the ALCS MVP in 2020, and in 123 postseason plate appearances with the Rays he has put up a .349/.423/.716 slash line with 11 home runs.

He’s also been consistently productive in the regular season. The veteran outfielder is an All-Star three times, including in each of the last two seasons with the Mariners, and he has posted six straight seasons with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases.

Even with Seattle’s overall struggles in 2026, Arozarena still stood out by leading the AL with 113 runs scored. He wouldn’t solve every issue in Philadelphia, especially on defense, but his bat would give the Phillies something they badly need: another proven run producer.

Phillies Fans Will Love The Rhys Hoskins Idea Until One Problem Appears

The Phillies issues against left-handed pitching have been hard to ignore, even after they tried to patch the problem by signing Adolis Garcia before he went down midseason. Philadelphia finished the 2026 season 18th in MLB with a 93 wRC+ versus lefties, a split that left plenty of room for debate about how the lineup should be built moving forward. It is the kind of weakness that naturally sends fans back to a familiar name, especially one with a track record in Philadelphia and a history of punishing southpaws.

Rhys Hoskins fits that nostalgia perfectly, and on paper he makes enough sense to spark real interest. He has handled left-handed pitching well in the past and has the kind of offensive history with the Phillies that makes a reunion easy to imagine, but the deeper you look, the more the fit frays. His recent decline at the plate, defensive limitations and the way the roster is already structured all point in the same direction, making this feel more like a tempting idea than a realistic offseason move. Phillies Eye A Rare Offseason Move With Real Lineup Impact

The Phillies are keeping an eye on a potentially unusual addition this offseason in Teruaki Sato, the Japanese free agent who won Nippon Professional Baseball MVP honors and is viewed as one of the top position players available. For a club looking to reinforce both its lineup and its power production, Sato fits the kind of profile that can draw real interest beyond the usual winter market chatter.

Philadelphia has never signed a player directly from Japan to an MLB contract, which gives this pursuit a layer of rarity as well as roster intrigue. If the Phillies push hard, they would be stepping into a lane only a couple of other big-league franchises have occupied, with the Rockies and Marlins as the only clubs in that category, and the appeal is obvious: a player with impact potential and a chance to address a need in one move. Yankees Could Finally Have A Real Answer At Third Base

Third base is shaping up to be one of the more interesting offseason questions for a handful of contenders, and the Phillies are right in the middle of it. Philadelphia still has uncertainty around Alec Bohms future, which puts the spotlight on a position that has been serviceable at times but far from settled as the winter market takes shape.

One name already drawing attention is Teruaki Sato, the Japanese standout coming off a Triple Crown-winning season. If he reaches the free agent market, he could become a target for clubs looking for stability at the hot corner, with the Phillies, Yankees and Red Sox all expected to be in the mix as they look to upgrade a position that matters a lot more than it sometimes looks on paper.
