With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, Tarik Skubal is right where you’d expect him: at the center of the noise. The Detroit Tigers’ left-hander has become the biggest name on the board, and the Philadelphia Phillies belong in the conversation if they want to chase a true impact arm.
Wednesday brought a clearer picture of what Detroit would want back if it ever moved the two-time Cy Young winner. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Tigers are looking for controllable starting pitching and top prospects in return. Rosenthal also identified Phillies former top pitching prospect Andrew Painter as a name that fits that profile.
That at least gives Philadelphia a starting point, but not much more than that. The Phillies do not have a deep farm system to work with beyond Painter, and that becomes a problem fast if Detroit is serious about demanding multiple premium pieces. Aidan Miller’s injury and Gage Wood’s necessity to the operation only make the pool thinner.
The organization’s prospect standing tells the same story. Entering the 2026 regular season, the Phillies were ranked 20th among MLB farm systems by MLB Pipeline. Since then, their placement has varied widely, from 15th in Keith Law’s view to 29th in Baseball America’s midseason re-rank.
Painter, meanwhile, has already reached the majors, but his first run was rough before he was sent back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In 14 games, 12 of them starts, he posted a 7.06 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. That’s not the kind of line that sells a trade by itself, but his rookie status still gives him plenty of value.
For Detroit, the appeal of dealing Skubal would be tied to the return. For Philadelphia, the appeal is obvious too.
Skubal has not been at his usual level in a contract year, and he missed a month after having loose bodies removed from his throwing elbow. Still, in 14 starts, he has gone 6-5 with a 2.83 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings, and he’s been rounding back into form with Aug. 3 approaching.
The Phillies’ need is simple: they want a fifth starter. If they decide to go big, there may not be a cleaner fix than adding one of the best pitchers in baseball and pushing everyone else down a spot in the rotation.
