Phillies May Be Closing In On A Decision Fans Will Debate

Despite early season struggles and managerial speculation, Don Mattingly's impressive turnaround with the Phillies positions him as a strong candidate for the permanent role.

Don Mattingly may have done enough in Philadelphia to turn an interim job into something more permanent.

After the Phillies moved on from Rob Thomson early in the 2026 MLB season, Mattingly stepped in on a temporary basis. At the time, it still felt possible the team would chase another name for the full-time role. But with Alex Cora reportedly turning down the Phillies, the path appears to be narrowing toward Mattingly staying put.

MLB insider Jon Heyman put it plainly on Tuesday: “Don Mattingly appears to have a decent or better chance to be retained as Phillies manager,” He added, “Went 79-55 to get into playoffs after taking over 9-19 team and has the respect of players and front office, as I said on @MLBNetwork.”

That turnaround is the core of Mattingly’s case. Philadelphia stumbled badly out of the gate, then steadied itself under his watch and fought back into the postseason as a National League Wild Card team. The run ended quickly, though, with the Phillies falling to the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card Series.

Even with that short postseason stay, Mattingly’s impact was clear. He has managed before, and the way the team responded after the change gave him real momentum inside the organization.

Still, nothing is finalized. The Phillies can keep looking at other managerial options if they want to, and they’re not locked into a decision yet. But based on the current buzz, Mattingly has a “decent or better chance” to become the manager moving forward.

Philadelphia has bigger offseason decisions hanging over it too. Several of the club’s top players are getting older, and that brings real questions about how long this group can keep contending. Whoever ends up in the dugout will be expected to push this team toward a World Series while that window is still open.

Phillies Face Tough Offseason Calls On A Few Familiar Names

The Phillies head into the offseason with the same familiar checklist: find more offense in the outfield and get steadier work from the bullpen. A team that spent the season trying to stay in the thick of the race now has to sort through a roster that still has useful pieces, but not enough certainty in a few key spots to ignore the winter ahead.

Brooks Raleys midseason arrival never gave Philadelphia the kind of relief help it was hoping for, and his spot in the plans looks shaky. Jose Alvarado is another name hovering over the bullpen picture after a season that never really found its footing, leaving the Phillies with decisions to make about how much turnover they want in a group that needs more reliability, not just more arms. Mets Face A Risky Third Base Decision David Stearns Can't Miss

Alec Bohm is the kind of name that naturally comes up when a team is searching for help on the left side of the infield, and the Mets have plenty to sort through this offseason as David Stearns looks for ways to sharpen a roster that still needs upgrading. An MLB.com insider recently floated Bohm as a possible free-agent fit, pointing to his All-Star background and the appeal of adding a known major league bat to a club trying to get better in a hurry.

The problem is that Bohms profile comes with real limitations, which is why this sort of move would be more complicated than it first appears. His defense has long been viewed as average, and the power production has never jumped into the kind of range that would make him an obvious difference-maker at third base, so if the Mets are going to make a meaningful change there, Stearns may need to aim higher. Phillies No. 3 Prospect Is Making His Rise Hard To Ignore

At just 17, Francisco Renteria is already drawing real attention inside the Phillies organization, and it is not hard to see why. The highly regarded infielder made his name with strong play in the Dominican Summer League, then carried that momentum into early action in the Venezuelan Winter League, giving the Phillies another young talent whose stock seems to keep climbing.

Ranked as the clubs No. 3 prospect and No. 73 overall by MLB, Renteria has quickly become one of the most talked-about names in the system. Philadelphia views him as a player with a strong all-around skill set and the kind of upside that could move him through the minor leagues faster than most, which only adds to the intrigue as his early pro path continues to build.
