The Philadelphia Phillies are heading into 2026 with a familiar mix of continuity and calculated risk. They’ve held on to key veterans Kyle Schwarber and J.T.
Realmuto-two clubhouse cornerstones who’ve been instrumental in the team’s recent postseason pushes. But while those returns provide stability, the departure of Ranger Suárez leaves a noticeable gap in the rotation.
Still, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski believes this group is built for another deep October run.
The challenge? It’s a big one.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have reloaded in a major way, adding both Kyle Tucker and Edwin Díaz to an already stacked roster. If the Phillies want to get back to the World Series, they’ll likely need to go through L.A.-and that road just got steeper.
Dombrowski remains confident, but there are still some question marks as Spring Training looms. One of the biggest is Nick Castellanos.
Despite his moments of offensive brilliance in Philly, the relationship between player and team seems to be heading toward a split. The latest reports suggest the Phillies are actively exploring trade options, and Dombrowski has acknowledged those discussions are ongoing.
Castellanos is set to earn $20 million, and with the Phillies already paying well over the luxury tax threshold, moving his contract could offer some much-needed financial flexibility. It’s not just about the money, though. The fit hasn’t always been seamless, and both sides may benefit from a fresh start.
Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler’s status is a major storyline. The ace right-hander was lights-out last season, posting a 2.71 ERA and a 10-5 record while anchoring the rotation during Aaron Nola’s up-and-down year.
But Wheeler underwent thoracic outlet surgery in late September-a serious procedure that often comes with a long recovery timeline. He’s started throwing again, reportedly out to 90 feet, but there’s no clear timetable for his return.
It’s very possible he won’t be ready for Opening Day.
With Wheeler sidelined and Suárez no longer in the picture, the Phillies are left with some real questions in the rotation. There’s an opportunity here to add another arm, and if they want to keep pace with the Dodgers and Braves in the National League, they may need to act sooner rather than later.
This Phillies roster still has plenty of firepower. Bryce Harper remains the face of the franchise, and Schwarber continues to be one of the game’s most dangerous power threats.
Realmuto is still a top-tier catcher, both behind the plate and at the plate. But if they want to take the next step-if they want to finish the job this time-they’ll need reinforcements, better health, and maybe a little luck.
The pieces are there. Now it’s about putting them together in time.
