The Phillies finally found a way to shake up an offense that had gone quiet, and they did it with one of the more surprising names on the market.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Philadelphia is landing Luis Arraez from the Giants, a move that immediately changes the shape of the Phillies’ infield. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale also reported that right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian is part of the deal going to Philadelphia, while right-handed pitching prospect Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair are headed to San Francisco.
Arraez comes in as a rental second baseman, but the appeal goes well beyond the position he plays. He’s 29, he’s hitting .324 this season to lead all NL hitters, and he’s done it without selling out for power. He has just four home runs, but he’s also piled up 23 doubles, seven triples, 3.1 bWAR and an .801 OPS.
What really makes him stand out for this Phillies team is the way he controls the strike zone. Arraez has struck out only 21 times this season and has 25 walks, a rare combination and exactly the kind of contact profile Philadelphia was missing.
The move also creates an immediate puzzle for the Phillies. Bryson Stott was already at second base, so there’s no clean answer yet for where everyone fits.
Stott could slide to third if Alec Bohm loses his starting job, whether that comes through a trade or a move to the bench. Another option is Stott at shortstop, which would allow Trea Turner to shift to the outfield, something many have been hoping to see because of Turner’s defensive struggles this season.
However it gets sorted out, the infield is crowded now, and Arraez gives the Phillies a very different look. It’s a costly deal for Dave Dombrowski, with Marquez and Gair going to the Giants, but it’s also the kind of upgrade Philadelphia badly needed.
