The Phillies are heading into a winter that could shape the next chapter of this run, and the pressure is obvious. The roster is getting older, the championship window is narrowing, and another playoff exit - this time at the hands of the Atlanta Braves - has only sharpened the need for a real answer.
One of the clearest issues sits in the outfield, where Philadelphia simply needs more offense. That has been a recurring theme, and it remains front and center as the club looks at ways to get back to the top of the National League.
“Of the areas that the team needs to address, not much has changed over the last couple of years. This is still a group that needs more offensively from their outfield and also better pitching from the bullpen. In terms of free agency, these should certainly be the areas that they are focused on, but it might not be the only one," SI's Nick Ziegler wrote.
That is where Teruaki Sato comes into the picture. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa pointed to the Japanese Triple Crown winner as a fit for Philadelphia after a monster season that included 39 home runs.
“The Hanshin Tigers will post Sato for MLB teams this offseason, the NPB club announced in late October. He will play the entire 2027 season at age 28 and is coming off a .306/.383/.609 slash line with 39 home runs, which won him Japan's first Triple Crown since Munetaka Murakami in 2022,” Axisa wrote.
Sato’s bat is the obvious selling point. The Phillies need more production across the lineup, and his 2025 season gave him the kind of profile that could make him one of the most intriguing names available. He also does not have to be locked into third base forever, since Philadelphia has a need in right field as well.
The bigger picture is simple: the Phillies want to get back to the World Series, and this winter could be one of the most aggressive they’ve had in a while. With the core aging and the margins getting thinner, adding a hitter like Sato would fit the urgency of the moment.

Phillies Could Target A Risky Infield Bat With Real Upside
The Phillies are already staring at a moving target in the infield, with Aidan Miller projected to arrive in 2027 and Alec Bohm potentially on track to hit free agency before then. Add in Edmundo Sosa reaching free agency and there is a real chance the bench looks different, too, which is why the front office may have to balance stability against upside when it starts mapping out the next version of the roster.
One name that fits that kind of gamble is Nolan Gorman, the former top prospect now with the Cardinals. He still carries the kind of bat that can tempt a team looking for offense, but his recent decline makes him a risky fit rather than a clean solution. For Philadelphia, the appeal would be obvious if he can rebound, though any move like that would hinge on believing there is still another level left in his game. [Read more 🡒]
Phillies Have An Obvious Bullpen Fix For A Costly Weakness
The Phillies enter the offseason with a bullpen need that is hard to miss, especially on the left side. Several of their left-handed relievers are heading toward free agency, and that leaves the club with a thinner look than it would prefer in a department that can swing tight games late in the season. One obvious way to address it would be to chase a proven lefty who can handle meaningful innings, and Adrian Morejon fits that profile as well as anyone on the market.
Morejon, now a free agent after earning All-Star recognition with the Padres in 2025, brings a track record that should appeal to a contender looking for stability. He has posted a 2.58 ERA over the last three seasons and has paired that run prevention with a strong strikeout rate, giving him the kind of arsenal the Phillies could use to balance out a bullpen that currently lacks reliable left-handed depth. Whether they move quickly on him will say plenty about how aggressively they plan to patch one of their most costly weaknesses. [Read more 🡒]
Yankees Infield Plans Could Get Complicated By One Phillies Prediction
The Phillies offseason picture already has one eye on offense, and John Harper of SNY.tv has added a wrinkle that could ripple beyond Philadelphia. In his read of the market, he sees the Phillies as a possible landing spot for Jazz Chisholm Jr., a move that would give them a different kind of bat and a more flexible defensive piece as they try to address the lineup issues that surfaced in 2026.
What makes the idea especially interesting is the chain reaction it could set off elsewhere, with Harper floating the possibility of Luis Arraez ending up with the Yankees. None of it is concrete yet, of course, but it is the sort of speculative domino effect that can complicate infield planning for multiple clubs at once, and it leaves both New York and Philadelphia with more questions than answers as the winter market takes shape.
