The Phillies may be circling a move that changes more than one corner of the roster.
Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that Philadelphia has been in contact with the Los Angeles Angels about shortstop Zach Neto, a deal that would bring youth and more punch to the lineup while also creating a ripple effect at third base. With Monday’s 6 pm deadline looming, the possibility of Neto landing in Philadelphia would not just be about adding another bat. It could also push Alec Bohm closer to the exit.
Bohm has been a problem spot all season. He’s carrying a .653 OPS in 2026, and that production has left the Phillies searching for an answer at the hot corner.
They were already looking for an upgrade there all offseason, but nothing materialized, and Aidan Miller’s back injury complicated things from the start. Neto’s arrival could finally force the issue.
If the Phillies do bring in Neto, the infield picture gets crowded fast. Trea Turner, Bryson Stott and Neto would all be in the mix, and however that alignment gets sorted out, Bohm still looks like the likeliest odd man out. Philadelphia has explored moving him before, and a Neto trade could reopen those conversations before the deadline passes.
The numbers on Bohm haven’t helped his case. Among 19 qualified third basemen, his .653 OPS ranks 17th.
Defensively, he has posted -7 outs above average, which is fourth worst among MLB third basemen. He did make his lone All-Star team in 2024, but he has not come close to matching that level since then.
For the Phillies, the appeal of Neto goes beyond simply adding another hitter. Passan noted that he could be the biggest name moved at the deadline, and that kind of swing would give Philadelphia a younger, more promising piece while also clearing up a long-running issue at third base. Bohm would likely have to be dealt separately, but the bigger point is clear: Neto could solve one problem and make it a lot easier to move on from another.
