Phillies Could Make One Quiet Infield Move That Really Matters

Could signing versatile free agent Edmundo Sosa be the key to strengthening the Phillies' lineup in the face of an aging roster and postseason disappointments?

The Phillies are heading into an offseason that could shape the next version of this roster in a big way, and one of the simplest decisions might also be one of the smartest: bringing back Edmundo Sosa.

Philadelphia is coming off a fifth straight trip to the postseason, but the finish was still a letdown after a loss in the NL Wild Card Round. With the club getting older and its title window now very much in question, there’s plenty on the checklist before next year gets here.

The big-picture needs are clear. Offense was an issue at times, and the bullpen gave the team trouble again.

Those are the obvious places to start. But the Phillies also have to sort through the smaller moves that matter over the grind of a long season, especially when injuries and rest days start piling up.

That’s where Sosa fits. He’s a free agent, and after what he provided in 2026, he looks like the kind of depth piece a team in transition should not let walk away. He moved around all over the diamond, handling both infield and outfield spots, and that kind of flexibility carries real value when a roster has so many unknowns.

There’s also uncertainty at two key infield spots. The Phillies are planning to give Trea Turner a shot at shortstop in spring training to try to get him back on track defensively, but he was one of the worst defensive players at the position last year.

At third base, Alec Bohm is also a free agent, and his return is still up in the air. Aidan Miller will be in the mix for one of those jobs, but Sosa gives the Phillies a veteran safety net no matter how that battle plays out.

And he earned that trust with production. In 84 games last season, Sosa hit .247/.283/.429 with nine home runs and 44 RBI. He brought some pop, drove in runs, and posted an OPS over .700, making him one of the more reliable bats in the lineup when he was in there.

It wouldn’t be the loudest move of the winter. But for a Phillies team with real questions to answer, it’s the kind of move that makes plenty of sense.

Phillies Could Target A Risky Infield Bat With Real Upside

The Phillies are staring at a familiar kind of roster question in the infield, where the long view and the short-term fit do not line up neatly. Aidan Miller is trending toward a 2027 arrival, Alec Bohm could be gone through free agency, and Edmundo Sosa is also headed for free agency, which could leave a bench opening that needs more than a stopgap answer.

One possible name to watch is Nolan Gorman, the former top Cardinals prospect whose upside still makes him interesting even after a rough stretch at the plate. Philadelphia would be buying low on a player whose recent performance has dipped, and any pursuit would hinge on whether the Phillies believe there is still enough rebound left in his bat to make the gamble worthwhile. Phillies Still See A Path For Felix Reyes After Brutal Rookie Year

Felix Reyes first big-league season was supposed to be a step forward, but it turned into a harsh introduction to life in the majors. The Phillies outfielder made his debut in 2026, struggled to get going at the plate and then saw his year cut short by a broken wrist, leaving him with far less runway than anyone had hoped.

Even so, the organization is still looking for a way to keep Reyes in the picture. After recovering, he was sent to winter ball in the Dominican Republic with the Toros del Este, a chance to keep his bat moving while the Phillies sort through an outfield situation that remains unsettled. With several key futures unresolved and outside additions still on the table, Reyes is one of the names that could matter more than his rough rookie year would suggest. [Read more 🡒]

Yankees Infield Plans Could Get Complicated By One Phillies Prediction

The offseason infield market is already starting to feel like a domino chain, and one of the more interesting links runs through Philadelphia. John Harper of SNY.tv has floated a scenario in which the Phillies could land Jazz Chisholm Jr. in free agency, a move that would give them the kind of power, speed and defensive flexibility they have been searching for as they look to sharpen an offense that has had its share of issues.

For the Yankees, the wrinkle is obvious: Harpers idea also has Luis Arraez headed to New York, which could complicate the clubs own infield planning if the Phillies do, in fact, pursue Chisholm. It is all speculative at this point, but it is the sort of offseason overlap that can make one teams wish list become another teams problem, especially when multiple contenders are eyeing the same talent pool.
