The Athletics’ search for a new top executive has put a familiar Phillies name in the mix, and Sam Fuld has emerged as one of the more intriguing candidates.
According to sources who spoke to Patrick Mooney and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Fuld is being considered to lead baseball operations as the Athletics prepare for their move to Las Vegas. He is currently Philadelphia’s president of business operations, and he previously served as the Phillies’ general manager under Dave Dombrowski from 2021 through 2024 before shifting into a smaller role in baseball operations.
Fuld’s path to this point has been an unusual one. He joined the Phillies in 2017 and started on the coaching side before moving into the front office under Dombrowski. He also built a resume that goes well beyond a typical baseball executive track, earning an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School after recognizing that he had a future in front office work and ambitions of eventually running a team.
His playing career gives him another layer of credibility. Fuld spent parts of eight seasons in the majors as an outfielder, appearing in 598 games and posting a .227/.307/.325 slash line with a bWAR of 5.1. He also spent parts of the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Athletics when they were still in Oakland.
That background makes him a natural fit on paper for a club looking to build its next baseball operation. He is a Stanford graduate, has major league playing experience, has front office experience, and has already worked in a leadership structure under Dombrowski.
But Fuld is not the only name the Athletics are weighing. Mooney and Rosenthal reported that Jared Banner, the Chicago Cubs’ general manager, is also in the search.
St. Louis Cardinals assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio has interviewed with the Athletics, though he remains in the mix for the Cardinals’ GM job under Chaim Bloom.
Other reported candidates include Milwaukee Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine and Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith.
The Athletics are expected to make a decision sometime this week. If Fuld gets the job, the Phillies would be left to fill a meaningful opening in their front office, adding another item to Dombrowski’s offseason list.

Phillies Could Sacrifice Core Pieces To Fix A Familiar Problem
The Phillies are heading into another one of those winters where the roster looks good enough to contend, yet still leaves just enough room for uncomfortable questions. With arbitration decisions looming, Philadelphia has some familiar names to sort through, including All-Star closer Jhoan Duran, Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott, and the front office will have to decide how much of the current core it wants to keep intact while still creating room to maneuver.
Duran is expected to stay put, but Marsh and Stott are the kinds of controllable pieces that can draw interest if the Phillies decide payroll flexibility matters more than continuity. Moving either one would not just be about subtraction, either. It would be part of a broader attempt to reshape the roster and chase upgrades in other spots, a reminder that even a contender can be pushed toward tough choices when the same needs keep surfacing each offseason. Red Sox Trade Speculation Keeps Raising One Massive Offseason Question
The Red Sox have never been shy about trying to upgrade through a trade, and that history has helped turn Bryce Harper into a recurring offseason talking point. For the Phillies, that alone is enough to make people pause, because Harper remains one of the most recognizable names in the sport and a central part of what Philadelphia has built around him.
Any talk like this quickly runs into the practical realities that matter most, though. Harpers no-trade protection gives him control over where a discussion even goes, and the money attached to a move would be a major hurdle for any team trying to make it work. For now, the idea lives in the same category as so many winter rumors, a mock proposal more than a roadmap, but it still underscores how closely rival clubs are watching the Phillies core. Trea Turner Has Become The Phillies' Toughest Offseason Debate
The Phillies are heading into an offseason that figures to be more restless than routine, and Trea Turner sits right in the middle of it. After a disappointing year, the front office has reason to examine almost every part of the roster, and Turners name is already surfacing in the kind of conversations that tend to follow a season that falls short of expectations. His contract alone makes any discussion complicated, and the fact that he is still a high-profile piece only raises the stakes for what comes next.
Even so, a trade feels like the sort of idea that gets talked through more than acted on. Turners age and recent struggles only add to the uncertainty, and the more immediate issue may be whether the Phillies decide he belongs somewhere other than shortstop. A move like that would not solve everything, but it would say a lot about how the club plans to balance its present with its future. [Read more 🡒]
