Owner John Middleton’s decision reflects the team's belief in Sanchez's potential and performance. His previous deal guaranteed $22.5 million over four seasons, but his standout 2025 season warranted a restructuring.
Last year, Sanchez was a force to be reckoned with, finishing second in the National League Cy Young race. He set personal bests in wins, ERA, innings pitched, and strikeouts. The Phillies boasted one of the league's top pitching rotations, and they’re aiming to replicate that success this season.
However, the team will start the season without Zack Wheeler, who is on the mend following thoracic outlet decompression surgery. Wheeler, known for his resilience, is taking a measured approach to his recovery.
“I think I'm probably just on track,” Wheeler shared with OnPattison's Anthony SanFilippo. “You guys know me by now.
I really don't try to get too excited about certain things. Like I said before, just kind of take it day by day.
We'll look forward to the next one and try to crisp it up a little bit more, try to get the velocity up just a tick more… That's usually how it goes during spring.”
