Phillies Choose Luzardo Over Skubal in Offseason Strategy Shift

Phillies secure rotation with Jess Luzardo extension, signaling a shift away from pursuing blockbuster free agents like Tarik Skubal.

Philadelphia Phillies fans have been eagerly awaiting a big offseason splash, but the team has opted for a different strategy. Instead of chasing high-profile free agents, they've focused on retaining their veteran core. This approach continued with the long-term signing of dynamic pitcher Jesús Luzardo, effectively ruling them out of the race for next winter’s marquee free agent, Tarik Skubal.

Luzardo, once a top prospect in the Nationals and A’s organizations, was traded twice for All-Stars-first to Oakland for Sean Doolittle and then to Miami for Starling Marte. While he showed promise, his major league performance was a mixed bag, posting a 4.29 ERA over 512 innings across five seasons.

Last offseason, Phillies’ president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made a savvy move by acquiring Luzardo from the Marlins, sending top-100 prospect Starlyn Caba and speedy outfielder Emaarion Boyd in return. Luzardo quickly showcased his potential, emerging as an All-Star talent and even a darkhorse Cy Young contender early in the season.

However, Luzardo faced challenges with two particularly rough outings in late May and early June that skewed his stats, despite a strong finish and two impressive playoff performances against the Dodgers.

Given Luzardo’s standout year in Philadelphia, extending his contract was an easy decision. The Phillies secured his services with a five-year, $135 million deal, solidifying their rotation for years to come. This move, however, likely means they won't pursue another expensive pitcher.

Tarik Skubal, the Detroit Tigers’ ace, is the crown jewel of the next offseason’s free agent class, following consecutive Cy Young-winning campaigns. Skubal is expected to command a record-breaking contract.

While Phillies fans have fantasized about a 2027 rotation featuring Skubal alongside a healthy Zack Wheeler and rising star Andrew Painter, the reality is that the team’s budget is tied up with hefty contracts for Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and now Luzardo. Dreaming is part of the fun, but the Phillies have made their choice, prioritizing stability in their pitching staff.
