The Phillies have brought infielder Sergio Alcántara on board with a minor league deal, as noted in the MLB transactions log. At 29, Alcántara is represented by The Movement Baseball.
Earlier this year, Alcántara inked a non-roster agreement with the Nationals. Despite making 12 plate appearances during Spring Training, he didn't secure a spot on the major league roster, leading to his release.
Over his career, spanning 193 games from 2020 to 2025, Alcántara has accumulated 506 plate appearances, posting a .207/.278/.340 slash line with a wRC+ of 70. While his offensive numbers may not dazzle, his defensive prowess, particularly in 2021 with the Cubs, is noteworthy.
That year, he posted a 73 wRC+ but contributed 1.0 fWAR over 89 games, thanks to his defensive skills, including 6 Outs Above Average at shortstop.
Alcántara didn't appear in the majors during 2023 and 2024, spending most of 2025 in the minors. Across 441 plate appearances in the Diamondbacks and Giants’ systems, he hit .251/.368/.341 with an 89 wRC+.
Although still below average, his 15.2% walk rate and sub-20% strikeout rate are promising signs for his on-base potential. If he can secure a bench spot with the Phillies, his ability to get on base will be valuable, even if his power numbers remain modest.
Defensively, Alcántara shines brighter than at the plate. His 2021 season stands out, but he consistently profiles as an above-average shortstop, boasting 3 career Defensive Runs Saved.
While his performances at second and third base haven't been as strong, his arm strength, as highlighted by Statcast in 2021 and 2022, bolsters his capabilities on the infield's left side. The fact that Alcántara continues to receive opportunities underscores teams' confidence in his defensive skills.
For the Phillies, Alcántara is viewed as a depth addition. With Trea Turner and Bryson Stott solidly positioned at shortstop and second base, and Alec Bohm handling third base, Alcántara adds valuable backup.
Alec Bohm, despite previous trade rumors, remains with the team, further solidifying the infield lineup. Edmundo Sosa and Dylan Moore are also in the mix, contributing to a competitive infield roster.
