That’s why ESPN’s Jeff Passan raising the possibility that Philadelphia might not check every box matters. Even with the club sitting six games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, Passan suggested it would still be acceptable if Dave Dombrowski doesn’t come away from the MLB trade deadline with a full shopping cart.
“Is it preferable to use the deadline for one big acquisition and a few smaller ones, or should the Phillies keep their top prospects and just aim for across-the-board solid players?" Passan writes.
"Maybe they surprise and do both. Sleep on Dombrowski at your peril.
But know that perhaps every need won't be addressed, and that's OK."
That’s not exactly the kind of message Phillies fans want to hear right now. The team’s recent slide has made every roster flaw feel louder, and the idea of leaving the deadline without a bullpen upgrade, a right-handed bat, or help in the rotation would be a tough sell.
There’s a balance here, of course. Philadelphia shouldn’t empty the farm system just to patch holes for one season. But there’s a big difference between avoiding a reckless overpay and walking away without touching the areas that matter most.
Even if the Phillies don’t land the biggest names available, they still need to do something meaningful. The bullpen issue can’t be ignored.
The right-handed hitting problem can’t be ignored. The rotation hole can’t be ignored.
If those gaps remain, the fallout could be ugly for both the clubhouse and the fan base, especially Bryce Harper. And if Philadelphia reaches October with one of those needs still hanging over the roster, it’s hard to picture this version of the team making much noise.
