The Mets have plenty on their offseason plate, and the question at third base is now part of the conversation. One recent MLB.com suggestion put Alec Bohm on New York’s radar, but there’s a strong case the Mets should steer clear.
Bohm, the Phillies third baseman, is a free agent this winter, and Mark Feinsand floated him as a possible fit for the Mets. In his view, the money situation around other roster options could open the door.
"Owner Steve Cohen could look past the money owed to (Jorge) Polanco if he believes Bohm is a good fit for the Mets, who are coming off of two straight seasons without reaching the postseason," Mark Feinsand wrote.
Feinsand also laid out the Mets’ infield production problems, noting, "The Mets' production at first base (.667 OPS) was third worst in the Majors, but Jorge Polanco is signed for $20 million next season. Their .684 OPS at third base ranked 19th in the Majors, but with Bo Bichette signed for $42 million in 2027 (with another $42 million player option for '28), the hot corner wouldn't appear to be available."
That’s the backdrop, but Bohm doesn’t exactly solve the Mets’ biggest issues. He’s been an All-Star, and his 2024 season was the best of his career, but the profile is still limited. He’s an average defender, and the power coming from third base isn’t exactly loud.
Bohm hit 20 home runs in 2024, which was a personal best. For him, that’s the ceiling so far. If the Mets are hunting for real pop, that number doesn’t do enough to move the needle.

Phillies Face Tough Offseason Calls On A Few Familiar Names
The Phillies head into the offseason with the same familiar checklist: find more offense in the outfield and get steadier work from the bullpen. A team that spent the season trying to stay in the thick of the race now has to sort through a roster that still has useful pieces, but not enough certainty in a few key spots to ignore the winter ahead.
Brooks Raleys midseason arrival never gave Philadelphia the kind of relief help it was hoping for, and his spot in the plans looks shaky. Jose Alvarado is another name hovering over the bullpen picture after a season that never really found its footing, leaving the Phillies with decisions to make about how much turnover they want in a group that needs more reliability, not just more arms. Phillies No. 3 Prospect Is Making His Rise Hard To Ignore
At just 17, Francisco Renteria is already drawing real attention inside the Phillies organization, and it is not hard to see why. The highly regarded infielder made his name with strong play in the Dominican Summer League, then carried that momentum into early action in the Venezuelan Winter League, giving the Phillies another young talent whose stock seems to keep climbing.
Ranked as the clubs No. 3 prospect and No. 73 overall by MLB, Renteria has quickly become one of the most talked-about names in the system. Philadelphia views him as a player with a strong all-around skill set and the kind of upside that could move him through the minor leagues faster than most, which only adds to the intrigue as his early pro path continues to build. Phillies Manager Search Suddenly Centers On One Familiar Name
The Phillies managerial search has taken a familiar turn, with Don Mattingly now at the center of it after finishing the season in charge and steering the club back into the playoffs. Mattingly stepped in after Rob Thomson was fired, and his presence has only grown as the front office weighs continuity against a broader search. He also has an existing contract as bench coach through 2027, a detail that could make him an especially practical option as the team looks to settle one of its biggest offseason decisions.
Alex Cora had emerged as a notable possibility, but he has turned down Philadelphias offer for a second time, saying he wants to take the 2027 season off. With that door closed again, the conversation has shifted even more firmly toward Mattingly, who already has support inside the clubhouse. The Phillies still have a decision to make, but the direction feels less mysterious now than it did a few days ago. [Read more 🡒]
