The Phillies are already set to play a major role when Major League Baseball brings the 2026 All-Star Game to Citizens Bank Park on Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14. Now Kyle Schwarber may be in line for an even bigger spotlight.
Philadelphia has six All-Stars this year: Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, Jhoan Duran, Brandon Marsh, Bryce Harper and Schwarber. Harper and Schwarber are both in the Home Run Derby, Marsh is a starter, and Sanchez could end up starting the game too.
That possibility got a boost after Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported on Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, who will miss the All-Star Game because of a knee injury. Ardaya wrote, "Shohei Ohtani won't pitch tonight and won't play in the All-Star Game due to 'continued irritation in his left knee,'" after an announcement from the Dodgers.
The news matters well beyond Los Angeles. Ohtani was in position to start the All-Star Game as a pitcher, and his absence opens the door even wider for Sanchez. It also clears the way at designated hitter.
With that spot now available, Schwarber looks like the natural choice to start for the National League. He drew plenty of fan support and also led the player vote at DH, so the case for him is already strong.
Schwarber has put together a big season, hitting 32 home runs while batting .254 with 58 RBIs and a .940 OPS, one of the top marks in Major League Baseball.
The move is not official yet, but replacing Ohtani with Schwarber at DH would fit cleanly. Ohtani’s injury means a new player will be added to the All-Star roster, and Schwarber should be the one stepping into the starting DH role.
