Joey Votto may have delivered the most painful sound bite of Phillies-Braves Game 3, and it came at exactly the wrong time for Philadelphia.
With Zack Wheeler having just retired the first hitter of the fourth inning, Votto went on the air and declared the game "up for grabs" because, in his view, the Braves weren’t going to score again off the right-hander. That call aged about as badly as it possibly could.
The next Braves batter reached, and then Ozzie Albies turned around and absolutely launched a two-run nuke off Wheeler. For a Phillies club already staring at a 3-0 hole, it was the kind of swing that made the whole inning feel even more brutal.
From Philadelphia’s side, the pain was less about Votto’s confidence and more about what followed. A game that was already frustrating got even more torturous in a hurry.
The booth noticed it, too. CJ Nitkowski warned Votto not to open social media, and Scott Coleman chimed in with the blunt assessment: "Might be best for Joey Votto to sit a couple plays out"
The night had a little more energy than the two afternoon games before it, but the on-field reality still tilted quickly against the Phillies. Aaron Nola appeared to feel the pressure of the short rest right away, losing the zone after retiring his first batter and then having to come back over the plate to Michael Harris II just to get something he could live with.

Phillies Exit Leaves One Brutal Question Fans Wont Shake
The Phillies season ended in Atlanta with the kind of October loss that lingers. Aaron Nola was knocked around early, Zack Wheeler came on in short rest and also gave up a two-run homer, and the Braves turned the game into a runaway by scoring six times while Philadelphia managed only two runs on six hits.
For a team that spent the year leaning on its front-line pitching, the way this Wild Card Round slipped away is hard to ignore. One starter was undone by a three-run blast before the night settled in, the other could not stop the bleeding behind him, and now the bigger question is whether this finish says more about a bad night or a deeper problem the Phillies have to confront heading into the offseason. Phillies Suffer Another Brutal October Exit For One Painful Reason
The Phillies latest October run ended the same way so many recent ones have, with another abrupt exit and the familiar sting of a season slipping away in a winner-take-all game. Atlanta handled the pressure better in Game 3, pulling away for a 6-2 victory behind a steady outing from Ray Kerr and a three-homer burst from Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson.
For a Philadelphia club trying to turn the page on postseason frustration, the pain is not just that the Braves advanced to face the Dodgers in the NLDS starting Saturday. It is how decisively Atlanta delivered the knockout, leaving the Phillies once again to sort through an October finish that felt all too familiar and all too hard to ignore. [Read more 🡒]
Braves Have One Power Threat To Watch In Winner Take All Game
With the wild-card round coming down to a winner-take-all Game 3, the Phillies and Braves are staring at one last chance to grab a trip to the NLDS. The series has already featured some timely home run swings, and that has only sharpened the focus on the bats most likely to tilt a short postseason game.
For Philadelphia, Kyle Schwarber remains the obvious power threat to watch, especially with the starting pitching matchup still unannounced. Atlanta has its own home run candidate in Drake Baldwin, whose recent pop has given the Braves a dangerous edge in a game where one big swing could decide everything. [Read more 🡒]
