Cristopher Sanchez keeps proving why the Phillies have leaned on him all season, and ESPN’s latest player rankings only drive that point home.
The left-hander came in at No. 6 on ESPN’s list of the top 50 players in baseball, making him the highest-ranked Phillies player on the board and the No. 2 pitcher in the sport. For a team dealing with some real uncertainty as August turns into September, that kind of recognition lands loudly.
Tristan Cockroft explained the ranking this way: "6. Cristopher Sanchez, SP, Philadelphia Phillies. He leads all pitchers in WAR (6.6) after doing the same last year (8.1), and he had a 50 2/3 scoreless innings streak in May -- which was the longest by a left-hander," Tristan Cockroft writes.
Even with a few rough outings mixed in lately, Sanchez’s season has been excellent from start to finish. In 25 starts, he owns a 2.54 ERA with a 15-4 record, 6.6 bWAR, one complete-game shutout, 181 strikeouts, and a 177 ERA+ across 155.2 innings.
The only real wrinkle in his season is the Cy Young race. Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers is described as the clear frontrunner, and it would take a lot to go wrong for him to lose the NL Cy Young Award.
That leaves Sanchez in position to finish as the runner-up for the second straight season, though the race is still alive. Even so, ESPN’s ranking is another reminder that the Phillies have one of the best starters in baseball right now, and they’re getting exactly what they need from him.

Kyle Schwarber has spent much of the summer looking like the middle-order force the Phillies needed, and the latest stretch has only reinforced that. After going 17 games without a homer, he broke through with a two-homer night against the Blue Jays on Aug. 9, then kept rolling in the Field of Dreams game against the Twins with two more blasts off Taj Bradley.
The production has pushed Schwarber to the top of the majors with 37 home runs, while his .250 average and .371 on-base percentage are both his best marks since 2021.
