Cristopher Sanchez Gets Superstar Label After Opening Day

Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez shines in his Opening Day debut, earning high praise and a new contract as he steps up to fill the ace role.

Philadelphia Phillies' left-hander Cristopher Sanchez put on a clinic against the Texas Rangers on Thursday, making a statement in his first start of the season. As last year's runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award, Sanchez showed exactly why he's considered one of the top pitchers in the game. Rangers' first baseman Jake Burger didn't hold back in his praise, calling Sanchez a "bonafide superstar."

Burger noted, "His changeup mirrors the shape and tightness of his sinker, keeping hitters off balance with ease. We just couldn't find a way against him. He's clearly an ace."

Sanchez delivered a masterful six innings, allowing no runs, issuing no walks, and striking out 10. Such a dominant Opening Day performance has only been matched five times before, with Hall of Famer Bob Gibson achieving it back in 1967.

Rangers' left-hander MacKenzie Gore was the last to reach this milestone, doing so against the Phillies last season.

With Phillies ace Zack Wheeler on the mend from shoulder surgery, Sanchez is stepping up to anchor the rotation. Wheeler is set to begin his rehab assignments with the Leigh Valley Iron Pigs (Triple-A) this Saturday.

After a stellar season where he went 13-5 with a 2.50 ERA, finishing second to Pittsburgh Pirates’ Paul Skenes in the Cy Young race, Sanchez secured a new contract. Initially signed to a four-year, $22 million extension in 2024, Sanchez has now inked a six-year deal worth $107 million.

Fellow left-hander and rotation mate Jesus Luzardo also received a contract extension, signing for five years at $135 million. Phillies president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, emphasized the importance of locking in Sanchez's talent for the future.

Dombrowski shared, "We looked ahead and had extensive discussions over the winter with [Phillies owner] John Middleton. We assumed club options for years four and five were a given, so we focused on extending beyond that. With Cristopher's caliber, securing this deal now made perfect sense."

The Phillies initially acquired Sanchez from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for infielder Curtis Mead in 2019. Mead, after struggling with a .238 batting average in the majors, was recently designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox.

Sanchez's rise underscores the Phillies' savvy in player development and their commitment to building a formidable pitching staff. His performance is a promising sign for the season ahead, showcasing the depth and potential of Philadelphia's rotation.
