Bryce Harper isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, at least not if things stay as they are in Philadelphia.
The 33-year-old is still locked in on bringing the Phillies their first World Series title since 2008 and capturing the first championship of his own career. Phillies fans love him, and he clearly feels the same way about the city and the team.
Still, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer floated a hypothetical that would shake up the league: if Harper ever decided to force his way out, one AL East team could make sense as a landing spot.
Rymer pointed to the Yankees, calling them a “perfect target on paper” for the nine-time All-Star.
“After what Dave Dombrowski said last year, Harper could be a different story. As a two-time MVP who can play first base and right field and who has a powerful left-handed swing, he's a perfect [New York] Yankees target on paper,” Rymer wrote.
The fit looks cleaner in theory than it does in practice. The Yankees already have a crowded mix at DH and first base, Aaron Judge is expected to be back in right field for most of 2027 when he isn’t at DH, and Ben Rice is at first base. There’s also trade pickup Luis Garcia Jr., who has 26 home runs and a .542 slugging percentage, and is under contract through next year.
Harper’s contract situation adds another layer. Rymer noted that he has 10-and-5 rights, which means he can block any trade and would have to approve a move even if the Phillies were open to talking.
For now, though, the whole idea remains firmly in the hypothetical pile.
