The Phillies’ search for a right-handed bat in the outfield has put one name in the spotlight: Taylor Ward.
With the Aug. 3 trade deadline less than two weeks away, Philadelphia’s needs are clear. The rotation and bullpen both need help, but the biggest hole sits in the outfield, where the lineup still lacks the right-handed production the club wants. Rival MLB executives, according to MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided.com, see Ward as a “strong fit” for the Phillies.
“In their search for a bat, rival executives believe Taylor Ward stands out as a strong fit,” Murray writes.
Philadelphia has already tried to patch the spot with Edmundo Sosa, Felix Reyes, Derek Hill, and now Bryan De La Cruz, but the results have been uneven. Hill has been the only one to provide consistent production, and the Phillies’ need for a legitimate right-handed outfielder remains obvious.
Ward’s 2026 numbers explain why he’s drawing attention. He’s hit .251 with a .746 OPS, 20 doubles, 2.4 bWAR, and an AL-leading 80 walks. His 112 OPS+ shows he’s still been an effective hitter overall, even if the profile looks different than it did a year ago.
That difference is mostly about power. Ward blasted 36 home runs last season and drove in 107 runs, but this year he has only seven homers and 27 RBIs. His slugging percentage has fallen to .359 from .475, and his home run rate has dropped from 5.4% to 1.5%.
There are still positives in his offensive profile. Ward has cut his strikeout rate by 6.1% and raised his walk rate by 5.8%. But the lost power is hard to ignore.
Even so, the Phillies may not have the luxury of being selective. Ward looks like one of the best right-handed hitting outfielders they could realistically pursue, especially since he’s a one-year rental. If Baltimore slips out of postseason contention, he could become available.
The Orioles are only 3.0 games back in the AL Wild Card race right now, so a sale is far from certain. But if Ward does hit the market, Philadelphia looks like a natural destination.
