In a thrilling showdown with a Frozen Four spot on the line, the Michigan State Spartans and Wisconsin Badgers delivered a game for the ages. Michigan State, featuring Flyers prospects Porter Martone and Shane Vansaghi, entered the clash after a nail-biting win over UConn, while Wisconsin was coming off a dominant performance against Dartmouth. This high-stakes contest needed overtime to declare a winner, with Wisconsin ultimately prevailing.
The game opened with both teams cautious, not wanting to concede an early goal. Wisconsin, however, managed to create a couple of promising opportunities on odd-man rushes. As the first period progressed, Michigan State found their rhythm, using strong defensive plays in the neutral zone to generate counterattacks.
A key moment in the first period was the loss of Charlie Stramel for Michigan State after he blocked a shot. This was a significant blow for the Spartans, forcing Eric Nilson and Tiernan Shoudy to double-shift on the top line.
Wisconsin struck first in the second period when Quinn Finley found the back of the net right off a faceoff. Shortly after, Porter Martone was penalized for roughing, but Michigan State's penalty kill held strong, maintaining the one-goal deficit.
Martone quickly redeemed himself by drawing a high-sticking penalty, giving the Spartans their first power play. Though he nearly tied the game with a strong chance, it was Gavin O’Connell who equalized, benefiting from a lucky deflection off a Wisconsin defender.
The Spartans seized momentum, scoring again just 31 seconds later. Shoudy set up Tommi Mannisto with a stretch pass, who then found Patrick Geary with a cross-ice feed to give Michigan State the lead.
Despite a penalty on Ryker Lee, Michigan State's penalty kill was on point. Lee almost extended the lead on a breakaway, but the goal was disallowed after review.
With 12 minutes left in regulation, Martone drew another penalty, setting up a power play that saw Matt Basgall score through heavy traffic, with Shoudy providing a crucial screen. This gave the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
However, Wisconsin wasn't done. They pressed hard, and a scramble in front allowed Luke Osburn to score, cutting the deficit. Just 34 seconds later, Gavin Morrissey tied the game with another net-front scramble.
The game moved to overtime after neither team could break the deadlock in regulation. Wisconsin dominated the third period, outshooting Michigan State 18-6. In overtime, it took only 24 seconds for Ben Dexheimer to score the game-winner, ending Michigan State’s season.
The Spartans, despite being favorites, struggled without Stramel and faced a tough opponent in Wisconsin, who had given them trouble all season. Martone’s impressive season concluded with 50 points in 35 games, and he is expected to turn pro soon, potentially joining the Flyers for a playoff push.
