The Ottawa Senators are still circling Rasmus Ristolainen as they look for help on the blue line, and the Flyers defenseman remains a name worth watching.
Philadelphia’s veteran blueliner has one year left on the five-year, $25.5 million deal he signed, a contract that carries a $5.1 million AAV. Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff reported that Ottawa has been tracking the 31-year-old all offseason.
“The Senators have kept tabs on [Flyers] defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen for quite some time,” said Di Marco via Daily Faceoff.
For Ottawa, the fit is easy to see. The Senators have one of the league’s youngest and most promising cores, but their defense still needs work if they want to move from hopeful to steady playoff team. Adding Ristolainen would give them a true top-pairing option and let some of their younger defensemen ease into bigger roles instead of being thrown into the fire.
Ristolainen, who was taken eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL draft, was traded to the Flyers in 2021. He has spent the last five seasons in Philadelphia and finished last season with 14 points, including one goal and 13 assists, in 44 games.
The Senators’ interest on the back end comes as general manager Steve Staios has also spoken confidently about the forward group after Brady Tkachuk’s departure. In an appearance on TSN Mornings with John Rodenburg, Staios said Ottawa has enough internal depth to handle the loss.
“Staios says he is ‘comfortable’ with this roster heading into the season. #Sens ‘We have some depth within our organization.’
He talked about elevating Foegele and Zetterlund. ‘We feel like we have internally the ability for players to move up our roster.’”
Tkachuk’s exit was a major jolt. The former Senators captain was dealt to the Florida Panthers in June, after reports said he had already asked out just a week after Ottawa’s first-round sweep at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes in the playoffs.
He’ll now skate in Florida alongside his brother Matthew Tkachuk next season. Ottawa drafted Brady fourth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, and he leaves behind a Senators career that produced 463 points, with 213 goals and 250 assists, in 572 games. He made the playoffs only twice in eight seasons in the Canadian capital, and both runs ended in first-round exits.

Michkov is not waiting around for the calendar to do the work for him, either.
