Patrik Laine’s name has been flying around the rumor mill lately, and the strange part is that the chatter didn’t really start with a blockbuster report or a dramatic twist. It began with one unconfirmed note, then snowballed fast.
Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette reported earlier this month that since free agency opened July 1, Laine had been linked to the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, and, most recently, the Philadelphia Flyers. That was a far cry from the original post by Stefen Rosner suggesting the New York Islanders might have some interest in Laine on a PTO.
Once Zurkowsky’s report started making the rounds, the story took on a life of its own. The Leafs connection, in particular, gave the whole thing another gear. That’s usually how these rumor waves build: one recognizable team enters the picture, and suddenly the topic gets treated like a much bigger deal.
At the time of Rosner’s post, the Islanders were only said to be willing to offer a professional tryout for the preseason, with nothing guaranteed. Talks between Laine’s camp and the team apparently hadn’t moved very far. Three weeks later, the conversation had shifted from one speculative fit to a market that looked much wider.
Training camp is getting close, and that tends to force everyone’s hand. Laine also has a decision to make, and the options matter.
If he’s looking at a PTO or a team-friendly deal loaded with bonuses, the latter could become the more attractive path. And if teams hear that he’s open to a low-base-salary contract because of how much time he missed last season, some clubs that weren’t involved before could decide to jump in.
The Flyers case makes sense on paper. Philadelphia finished last in power-play percentage last season, and Laine’s game has always been tied heavily to the man advantage - 15 of his 20 goals in a shortened 2024-25 season with Montreal came on the power play.
The fit is still the kind of thing that would make some people pause, especially when you imagine Laine under Rick Tocchet. Toronto presents a different kind of obviousness: putting Laine alongside Auston Matthews, the No. 1 pick in the same draft where Laine went second overall, is exactly the sort of storyline that sells itself.
For now, the safest read is that the interest is real. The scale of that interest is the part that remains murky.
Some teams may simply be looking for the cheapest possible upside. Others could believe Laine can still help them in a more meaningful way.
There’s also the possibility that the list is longer than what’s been reported. Daniel Genest noted that Laine has been training with Florida Panthers players, including his fellow Finn and close friend Aleksander Barkov.
The biggest concern, though, is impossible to ignore: Laine hasn’t finished a full season since 2018-19. That’s the risk every interested team has to weigh.
So the market hasn’t exactly blown up. It’s just finally come into focus.
What looked like scattered curiosity has been gathered into one cleaner picture, and with camp nearing, the pressure is on. The real question isn’t whether teams are interested.
Multiple teams clearly are. It’s whether any of them are willing to spend a roster spot on him.
