Two weeks ago, it seemed like the Philadelphia Flyers' season was all but over. But fast forward to today, and there's a flicker of hope on the horizon.
After the Olympic break, the Flyers stumbled out of the gate with a loss to the Washington Capitals, which threatened to derail any momentum. However, they quickly rebounded with a three-game winning streak, only to be shut out at home by the Utah Mammoth just before the trade deadline.
At the deadline, the Flyers kept it simple. They made just one significant move, calling up Alex Bump to replace Bobby Brink.
The Flyers' 6-2 loss to the New York Rangers was a setback, but they’ve shown resilience, picking up crucial points against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. Impressively, they went to Minnesota and secured two points against the Wild in the second game of a back-to-back, winning both matchups.
Now, the Flyers find themselves just five points shy of the last wild card spot and six points from the final playoff berth in the Metropolitan Division.
With 17 games left, including Saturday’s clash against the Blue Jackets, the Flyers are in a pivotal stretch. Eight of these games are against direct competitors for playoff spots: three against the Red Wings, two against the Blue Jackets, and one each against the Bruins, Islanders, and Capitals.
Their remaining schedule includes a challenging West Coast swing against the Ducks, Kings, and Sharks, along with home games against the Blackhawks and Stars, and road contests against the Devils and Jets. The season concludes with a tough home back-to-back against the Hurricanes and Canadiens.
Saturday’s game against the Blue Jackets is crucial. With two games left against Columbus and a four-point gap between them, these points are vital. A win could close the gap, while a loss might make it insurmountable, adding another hurdle in Philly’s playoff chase.
After Saturday, 16 games will remain, and the Flyers need to capitalize on a series of winnable matchups. They’ll likely need to win around 10 of their last 17 games to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Saturday’s game is a key step in their postseason quest. A win puts the Flyers right in the thick of the playoff hunt, and they know exactly what’s at stake.
