Oliver Bonk has kept forcing his way into the conversation at Flyers camp.
The 2023 first-round pick has been one of the more noticeable players at the team’s 2026 rookie camp and into main training camp, earning attention for the kind of smart, steady two-way game that tends to stick with coaches. At 21, the right-shot defenseman has put himself in the mix for an NHL roster spot, and he’s done it by looking comfortable in all three zones.
His work in the Rookie Series against Rangers prospects turned heads, especially in the second game, a 4-1 Flyers win. Bonk picked up an assist when he set up longtime junior teammate Denver Barkey on a 2-on-1 for the opening goal.
He also logged time on the power play in the bumper role, worked on the penalty kill, and kept finding ways to jump into the rush. The people watching saw a defenseman who was involved everywhere.
Lehigh Valley Phantoms head coach John Snowden, who is overseeing parts of camp, pointed directly to Bonk’s hockey sense. “He’s very smart, and he’s surgical on his decisions and when he jumps up into the play.
He’s good at kind of hiding himself in those situations and just hitting with a burst and jumping into a spot at the right time.” Snowden also praised Bonk’s transition game and his knack for finding “sneaky” soft spots.
Bonk arrived at camp with a little NHL experience already on his résumé from the end of the 2025-26 season. He scored in his debut against Montreal in the final regular-season game and also appeared in a playoff game. This summer, he said he focused on improving his skating and getting himself more ready for the next step, and he’s approached the shortened camp with that urgency in mind.
He’s battling for a bottom-pairing job alongside players such as David Jiříček and Simon Benoit. As of the late-September cuts, Bonk was still in main camp. Even if an AHL assignment with the Phantoms remains a possibility because of the numbers, he has continued to make a strong case for a full-time NHL look.
