Jakob Pelletier's Journey: A Missed Opportunity for the Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers might be feeling a bit of regret as they watch one of their former prospects, Jakob Pelletier, light up the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch. Pelletier, who was part of a trade package with Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee to the Calgary Flames, briefly wore the Flyers' colors before becoming a free agent.
Pelletier, now 25, signed a three-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning for $2.23 million. His contract raised eyebrows as it was an uncommon multi-year agreement at the veteran minimum, especially after he played 49 NHL games last season, tallying seven goals and 12 assists.
While the Lightning are stacked and chasing another Stanley Cup, Pelletier has found himself primarily in the AHL, where he's been nothing short of sensational. With 22 goals and 39 assists in just 50 games, he's leading the league in scoring. This isn't entirely shocking given his consistent point-per-game pace since the 2021-22 season, but it's clear he's taken his game to another level.
Meanwhile, the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, could certainly use a player of Pelletier's caliber. They have only two forwards, Lane Pederson and Anthony Richard, who have surpassed 30 points this season. The Phantoms have been hit hard by NHL call-ups and trades, losing key players like Alex Bump, Denver Barkey, Samu Tuomaala, and Alexis Gendron.
The Flyers opted to fill their depth with Carl Grundstrom, but after a hot streak in December, his production has cooled significantly. Grundstrom has managed just one goal and one assist in his last 22 games, highlighting the gap Pelletier's presence could have filled.
As Pelletier continues to dominate the AHL, the Flyers may be left pondering what could have been if they had kept this dynamic forward in their ranks.
