Michkov Stuns Rangers with Overtime Win for Flyers at Madison Square Garden

Matvei Michkov's clutch performance lights up a thrilling overtime victory for the Flyers against the Rangers.

The Philadelphia Flyers took center stage at Madison Square Garden Thursday night, facing off against the New York Rangers in the second game of a back-to-back. With Sam Ersson guarding the net and Emil Andrae stepping in on defense, the Flyers were determined to make their mark.

Despite trailing by two goals early in the second period, Trevor Zegras and Matvei Michkov rallied the team, eventually tying the game and pushing it into overtime. Michkov's second goal of the night clinched the victory for the Flyers, boosting their record to 26-21-11.

The Rangers struck first, with Sam Carrick finding the net at 9:56 in the first period. He capitalized on a loose puck, sending a wrist shot past Ersson, assisted by Taylor Raddysh and Will Borgen.

A bit of old-school hockey flared up when Garnet Hathaway and Carrick dropped the gloves after Hathaway's hefty hit on Brennan Othmann. Both players earned five-minute majors for fighting, and Hathaway's boarding penalty handed the Rangers the first power play. However, the Flyers' penalty kill unit stood strong, preventing any shots on goal.

The Rangers extended their lead to 2-0 just over a minute into the second period. Alexis Lafreniere, with a sharp backward pass from Will Cuylle, sent a wrist shot past Ersson. Cuylle and Vincent Trocheck picked up the assists.

The Flyers got their first power play opportunity when Othmann was penalized for cross-checking. Despite some solid puck movement and a big glove save from Rangers' goalie Igor Shesterkin on Noah Cates, the Flyers couldn't capitalize.

A high-sticking call on Conor Sheary gave the Flyers another power play, and this time, they made it count. With just two seconds left, Michkov took a pass from Cates and sent a snapshot past Shesterkin, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Cates and Owen Tippett earned the assists.

The Rangers' second power play came after a high-sticking penalty on Zegras, but Ersson and Hathaway's defensive efforts kept them at bay. A subsequent interference call on Trocheck resulted in a brief four-on-four before the Flyers had another power play, though they couldn't convert.

Zegras evened the score at two early in the third period, teaming up with Travis Konecny and Christian Dvorak for a two-on-one break. Zegras held his nerve, firing a wrist shot over Shesterkin's blocker. Konecny and Travis Sanheim assisted on the play.

The Flyers had several more power play opportunities, but the Rangers' penalty kill proved tough, with aggressive play and strategic clears. A high-sticking penalty on Vladislav Gavrikov gave the Flyers another chance, but Shesterkin's stellar saves kept the score tied.

In the dying seconds of the third, Michkov's goaltender interference penalty gave the Rangers a power play heading into overtime. Ersson stood tall, making crucial saves against Trocheck, Mika Zibanejad, and J.T. Miller.

The Flyers sealed the win 2:10 into overtime. Michkov, fresh from the penalty box, received a pass from Sean Couturier, maneuvered around Miller, and slipped a wrist shot through Shesterkin's legs. Couturier and Nick Seeler notched the assists, finalizing a 3-2 victory for the Flyers.

On special teams, the Flyers were one for five on the power play and successfully killed all three of the Rangers' advantages. Ersson's performance was solid, saving 23 of 25 shots and posting a .920 save percentage.

The Flyers are set to face the Boston Bruins next in Philadelphia on Saturday, Feb. 28.
