That backdrop made this past weekend matter even more for Luchanko. The 20-year-old put together a strong showing in the rookie tournament, and one play in particular changed the temperature around him: his assist on Alex Bump’s game-winner against the New York Rangers.

Luchanko beat the Rangers’ defenders and set Bump up for the finish, a sequence that felt like the kind of flash the Flyers have been waiting to see. Afterward, Lehigh Valley Phantoms coach John Snowden, who coached the Flyers rookies in the game, had plenty of praise for him.
“Jett, as a centerman, is skating so good, he takes up space quickly. He’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he closes plays fast because he can get there,” Snowden said.
“Once they got the puck in the O-zone, I just thought they moved it well. They held onto it, they didn’t force plays, they extended possessions.”
Those remarks, as quoted in The Athletic, point to a player who may have boosted his standing in the organization after entering the weekend with questions swirling around his place in the prospect hierarchy.
There’s also a bigger reason the Flyers need this to work. Luchanko spent about a year and a half dealing with a core muscle issue, according to Kevin Kurz in The Athletic, and that nagging problem likely affected his game and complicated his development. The surgery appears to have cleared that up, and now the hope is that his path back toward NHL progression is back on track.
Philadelphia’s need is pretty straightforward. As a center, Luchanko would fit a depth chart that already has Christian Dvorak at the top and Trevor Zegras projected to take over the second-line role, but still leaves room for more punch behind them.
Porter Martone could add offense in his first full season in the NHL, but he’s a winger. The Flyers need a player who can bring more high-end talent down the middle.
If Luchanko ends up as a winger, it gets harder to see where he fits in the top nine. That’s why his best shot at helping Philadelphia is probably in the middle. If he can handle that role, the Flyers get the kind of depth they’re looking for.
For now, the likeliest outcome is that Luchanko opens the season in Lehigh Valley. Even so, if this weekend is any indication, he should be near the front of the line when the Flyers start looking for call-ups later in the season.
