The Flyers came out of Saturday night with the same problem they’ve had all week: a close game, an overtime chance, and no points to show for it.
Philadelphia fell 3-2 to the defending champion Hurricanes at Xfinity Mobile Arena, and the loss left Rick Tocchet’s team still searching for its first win at 0-1-2. The Flyers had 34 seconds of power play time to start overtime, but they couldn’t cash in before Shayne Gostisbehere ended it for Carolina with a power-play winner. Owen Tippett was in the box for slashing on the deciding sequence.
It was the Flyers’ third straight loss to open the season, and the first time they’ve started that way since 2014-15, when they dropped four straight and opened 0-2-2.
Tippett and Matvei Michkov scored for Philadelphia, while Sebastian Aho scored twice for Carolina. Aho’s first goal came just 10 seconds into the game, and his second tied things up early in the third period on the power play after Michkov was penalized for holding.
Philadelphia also got a strong night from Joseph Woll, who stopped 37 of 40 shots. Tocchet stuck with Woll after the goalie made 41 saves in Thursday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Devils, and Woll gave the Flyers a real chance to steal this one. One of his best stops came late in the second period, when he stretched out to deny William Carrier on a rebound and kept Philadelphia ahead 2-1.
The lead didn’t last. Carolina erased it early in the third, then held on long enough to get to overtime and finish the job. Pyotr Kochetkov made 16 saves on 18 Flyers shots, and Philadelphia was outshot by double digits for the third game in a row.
The matchup also brought the Flyers back against the team that knocked them out in the second round last season. Carolina swept that series, and the Flyers have now lost 21 of their last 24 games against the Hurricanes, playoffs included, dating back to the start of the 2021-22 season.
There was a scary moment on the back end as well. Rasmus Ristolainen took a shot off his left hand with 3:31 left in the second period.
He briefly returned at the start of the third, but after his shift he headed back up the tunnel and did not come back. The team said he’ll be reevaluated Sunday.
That matters for a Flyers defense already leaning on Ristolainen next to Travis Sanheim. Simon Benoit was the extra defenseman Saturday and could see a bigger role if Ristolainen misses time.
The injury could also create an opening for Oliver Bonk, the 21-year-old prospect who has been pushing for a look. David Jiricek made his season debut against Carolina and skated on the third pair with Nick Seeler.
The Flyers did get something out of Tocchet’s lineup shuffle. Putting Michkov with Christian Dvorak and Travis Konecny paid off, just as it had in the third preseason game. Tocchet had said earlier Saturday, "They did play well that game," so hopefully some same kind of magic happens.
That line delivered Philadelphia’s go-ahead goal in the second period, with Michkov finishing the play. Tippett had already tied the game at 1-1 in the first period, giving the Flyers their first goal by a forward this season. He worked through traffic from the slot, stayed with the play after his first attempt was blocked, and buried his third chance.
Denver Barkey also remained part of the pregame conversation. He was on the ice for morning skate in a non-contact jersey while dealing with a lower-body injury and had been considered day to day.
Later in the skate, he switched into a regular jersey, and Tocchet said next week was a possibility for his return. "I think it's the first time where he switched jerseys, a little more and more contact," Rick Tocchet said.
"When that happens, obviously you get closer and closer. Hopefully he's a possibility this week."
Danny Briere also joined Jim Jackson and Brian Boucher in the booth during the first intermission.

Gostisbehere Broke Flyers Hearts Again In A Game Carolina Nearly Lost
Shayne Gostisbehere has a way of making life difficult for the Flyers, and he did it again in a game Carolina nearly let slip away. His overtime winner delivered the Hurricanes a win in Philadelphia and marked the third time he has beaten the Flyers in overtime, a familiar ending for a player whose name still carries extra weight in this matchup.
For the Flyers, the night added another layer to an early-season offensive struggle, with chances hard to come by and the margin for error shrinking as the game wore on. The bigger concern may have come on the back end, where Rasmus Ristolainen exited after blocking a late second-period shot and never returned, leaving Philadelphia to absorb another tough result while Joseph Wolls 37 saves helped Carolina escape with its third win of the season. Flyers Have Another Early Problem Fans Really Didn't Need
The Flyers trip through the young season already has a familiar feel to it, and not in a good way. They fell 3-2 to the Hurricanes in overtime after spotting Carolina a goal in the first 10 seconds, then spent the rest of the night trying to claw back into a game that never quite settled into their favor.
There was more bad news beyond the final score, too, as Rasmus Ristolainen left with a right hand injury, leaving Philadelphia to wonder about its defensive depth heading into the next game. Add in a power play that still has not found the net this season, and the Flyers are suddenly dealing with more than just one frustrating loss. [Read more 🡒]
Flyers Already Face A Stress Test For Tocchets Early Line Changes
The early weeks of the 2026 regular season have already pushed the Flyers into some lineup tinkering, and not just the kind that comes with a coach trying to get a read on his group. Philadelphia has been sorting through forward combinations while keeping its power-play units intact, trying to balance continuity with the reality that the roster is still settling in. One of the bigger adjustments has been moving Travis Konecny into a new setup and working rookie Porter Martone into a different role as the staff looks for the right mix.
The challenge could grow quickly if the blue line has to absorb another change. Rasmus Ristolainen left a game on Oct. 3 with an injury and is being evaluated day to day, which leaves the Flyers watching their defensive pairings as the schedule tightens up. With a stretch of road games ahead before a home date with the Carolina Hurricanes, these early shifts may not stay minor for long, and the next few line combinations could tell a lot about how patient the Flyers plan to be.
