The Flyers built two separate two-goal cushions Saturday afternoon and still walked off the ice empty-handed, a brutal 5-4 loss to the Ducks at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Rick Tocchet’s team came out flying, grabbed a 2-0 lead, and later pushed it to 3-2 in the second period. None of it held. Anaheim tied the game before the second intermission, then took control early in the third and never gave the lead back.
Matvei Michkov kept rolling for Philadelphia with two more goals, stretching his point streak to five games. He now has six goals and two assists during that run. Porter Martone and Tyson Foerster also scored for the Flyers, with Foerster’s shorthanded goal restoring a 3-2 lead in the second period before the Ducks answered right back.
The final swing came quickly after the break. Anaheim went ahead two minutes into the third when Joseph Woll allowed a soft goal to third-pair defenseman Tristan Luneau. Beckett Sennecke made it 5-3 on the power play 5:10 later, and while Michkov pulled the Flyers back within one at 5-4, they could not find the equalizer.
Anaheim got a strong outing from Lukas Dostal, who stopped 28 of 32 shots. Woll finished with 21 saves on 26 shots, and this one never looked like one of his sharper nights.
The early third-period goal was a rough one, but the game was already tied because of him. He had just made back-to-back excellent saves on Cutter Gauthier in the final 12 seconds of the second period while Anaheim had the man advantage.
The Ducks’ comeback began in the second period, when Leo Carlsson capitalized after a failed exchange behind the net between Woll and Nick Seeler. A.J.
Greer followed with a quick shot that hit the post, then Woll’s skate, before sliding over the line. Judd Caulfield then answered Foerster’s shorthanded tally in less than a minute and a half, and Anaheim carried a 3-3 tie into the room.
Michkov opened the scoring on a 5-on-3 power play, curling into the slot and beating Dostal with a sharp finish for his seventh of the season. Martone doubled the lead just 1:03 later on the 5-on-4, with Travis Sanheim finding the rookie winger at the doorstep. The Flyers drew those chances after Hunter McDonald laid a clean hit on Sam Colangelo, which triggered three Ducks penalties in response.
McDonald, a 24-year-old defenseman, has been an effective hitter through three games this season.
Carlsson finished with a goal and an assist, while Gauthier picked up an assist in his third return to Philadelphia since being traded in January 2024 after declining to sign with the Flyers. He was drafted fifth overall by the club in 2022, and Flyers fans made sure he heard it, greeting him with boos and chants.
The Flyers had beaten Gauthier’s Ducks in each of his first two visits to Philadelphia by a combined 11-2, but this time Anaheim got the upper hand. Last season, Trevor Zegras added another layer to the matchup after Anaheim traded him to Philadelphia in the offseason. This summer, the tension grew again when the Flyers made a loaded offer sheet to Leo Carlsson, only for Anaheim to match it and keep its franchise center.
The loss snapped the Flyers’ three-game winning streak and dropped them to 3-7-3. Anaheim improved to 5-6-0.
Rasmus Ristolainen returned to the lineup after missing nine games with a left hand injury. He played 14:34 and finished minus-1. Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett and Cam York remained out.
The Flyers are back in action Tuesday when they host the Blue Jackets.

Flyers Suddenly Have A Good Problem As Win Streak Faces Test
The Flyers head into Anaheim with a little momentum and, for once, a roster conversation that feels more encouraging than worrisome. After winning three straight, Philadelphia has gotten a lift from rookie Cole Knuble, who made a noticeable impact in the last game with two goals and has started to strengthen his case for a larger role as the lineup settles into a better rhythm.
Philadelphia may also have a veteran option back in the mix, with defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen a possibility to return after missing time since the second game of the season. That kind of decision can be a good problem for a team that has been looking for stability, but it also puts the Flyers in a spot where recent performance may force some tough lineup choices before the streak gets its next test. Michkov Is Giving The Flyers Something They Have Been Missing
Matvei Michkov keeps giving the Flyers the kind of finishing touch they have long been searching for. In a recent game, the young winger added another burst of offense for Philadelphia and continued a fast start to the 2026-27 season, building on the promise he flashed as a rookie and showing a scoring pace that has put him near the top of the NHL early on.
The encouraging part for the Flyers is not just the production, but the way it has fit into the lineup with Noah Cates beside him. Michkov, Cates and goalie Joseph Woll all offered their thoughts after the game, underscoring how much attention this stretch of play is drawing as Philadelphia looks for more consistent offense from its best young creator. Flyers Loss Brought Back The Leo Carlsson Sting
Leo Carlsson was a central figure again on a night when the Flyers seemed to have control, then watched it slip away. Anaheim erased a two-goal deficit to beat Philadelphia 5-4, with Carlsson scoring once and helping drive the Ducks comeback. He now leads Anaheim in scoring with 13 points this season, a reminder of the talent the Flyers have seen from afar while trying to build their own forward momentum.
Philadelphias three-game winning streak ended despite goals from Matvei Michkov, Tyson Foerster and others, and the loss carried an extra edge because Carlsson remained right in the middle of the action when the game turned. The Flyers have had to live with the sting of watching a young center grow into a featured piece for Anaheim, and this was another night when he looked every bit like the sort of player a team can build around.
