The Flyers are digging out of an ugly start, but Sunday brought at least one bit of good news for a team desperate for anything that can change the temperature. Philadelphia recalled defenseman Oliver Bonk from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and the 21-year-old is expected to make his season debut against the Carolina Hurricanes at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Bonk’s arrival comes with the Flyers mired in a historic skid. After a 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Saturday, Philadelphia dropped to 0-6, marking the second time in franchise history the club has opened a season without a win through six games. The team has been battered on both sides of the puck, and the blue line has taken some of the worst hits.
Cam York is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, while Rasmus Ristolainen was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to October 3, with an upper-body injury as well. The Flyers may get York back after this next game, but the shortage on defense has already forced the issue. Bonk gives them another body, sure, but also a chance to inject some puck-moving skill into a lineup that badly needs a jolt.
Selected by Philadelphia with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Bonk has already flashed a little of what the Flyers hope to get from him. He played 46 games for the Phantoms last season, finishing with six goals and 19 points and a minus-14 rating. He also made his NHL debut in the Flyers’ penultimate game of the 2025-26 regular season, which also came against Carolina, and turned in a sharp first impression with a goal, an assist and 16:28 of ice time.
This season, Bonk has suited up for only two games with Lehigh Valley, recording a pair of assists. Even in that brief stretch, though, he’s been used heavily and positively at 5-on-5, while also logging a lot of minutes on both special teams. His offensive touch has shown up in the attacking zone, but he’s also given the Phantoms a steady presence defensively.
That balance is part of why the Flyers are giving him this look now. Bonk was a major offensive driver for the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, putting up 67 points in 60 games in his draft-plus-one season.
“Bumper Bonk” earned that nickname for a reason, and there’s at least a chance he gets a crack on the power play in Philadelphia. The Flyers have gone just 2-for-18 with the man advantage to start the season, so any extra creativity from the back end would be welcome.
The numbers around the team’s start tell the story of how much help they need. Through six games, Philadelphia owns a minus-95 shot differential, which ranks as the fourth-worst through a team’s first six games in NHL history. Bonk isn’t walking into the lineup with any promise of solving all of that on his own, but he does fit the profile of a player who can help a little where the Flyers have been lacking the most.
He’s expected to enter the lineup over Helge Grans or Simon Benoit. Grans and Benoit were both rough in the loss to Boston, while David Jiricek also struggled despite showing occasional flashes early in his Flyers stint.
Bonk also has recent familiarity with Carolina, having made his playoff debut against the Hurricanes in Game 4 of the second round last spring. It’s a tough spot to step into, but the Flyers will take whatever lift they can find.

Flyers Early Skid Is Already Raising Bigger Questions About This Roster
Seven games into the season, the Flyers are already facing the kind of early turbulence that can change the conversation around a roster fast. Their latest loss came against the Carolina Hurricanes, extending a rough start that has left Philadelphia searching for any kind of rhythm or consistency while the goals and results keep piling up in the wrong direction.
The numbers have been hard to ignore, with the club struggling to finish chances and get much going on special teams, and coach Rick Tocchet has been blunt about the need for patience and improvement. Players are saying the right things about sticking with it, but the bigger question now is whether this is simply an ugly opening stretch or a sign of deeper problems that this group has to sort out before the hole gets much harder to climb out of. Flyers Frustration With Rick Tocchet Just Reached Another Level
The early-season spiral in Philadelphia kept getting uglier in Raleigh, where the Flyers dropped a 4-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes and saw another lineup experiment go sideways. Prospect defenseman Oliver Bonk was elevated to the top defensive pairing and had a rough night, a move that only added to the sense that the team is searching for answers in real time as the losses pile up and the frustration grows louder.
Rick Tocchets decisions are now under a harsher spotlight because the results have left so little room for patience. With the offense sputtering, the defense unsettled and the group still waiting for a clean response, the Flyers look stuck between development and damage control, and the bigger concern is that the season is already drifting in a direction no one around the team can afford to ignore. Flyers Coaching Speculation Just Got More Frustrating After 0-7 Start
Seven straight losses have put the Flyers in an ugly early-season hole, and the frustration around the team has already started to spill into familiar territory. When a club opens this way, the first place fans often look is behind the bench, and John Tortorellas name has been central to the speculation as Philadelphia searches for any sign of a reset.
For now, though, the noise may be louder than the reality. Reports from Sportsnets Elliotte Friedman suggest a coaching change is not considered likely at this moment, which leaves the Flyers in the awkward spot of being mired near the bottom of the standings without an obvious short-term fix. NHL history has plenty of unusual midseason moves, but this one appears headed toward patience for the time being, with the bigger question centered on how long the team can ride out the slump before something more dramatic becomes unavoidable.
