August may be slow, but it still found a way to deliver one of the bigger goalie storylines of the summer: Connor Hellebuyck has gone public with his trade request to the Winnipeg Jets.
With training camp creeping closer, that timing matters. Hellebuyck made it clear why he wanted this out there now, and the result is a situation that could ripple well beyond Winnipeg. For the Flyers, it’s the kind of development worth watching even if they’re not directly in the mix.
There’s a good chance Philadelphia ends up seeing Hellebuyck more than usual this season. And while Eric Tulsky and Carolina are not a team I’d expect to jump in, the Hurricanes would clearly benefit from having the 33-year-old on their side, even after winning the Stanley Cup.
New Jersey, meanwhile, has already moved Jacob Markstrom to Florida and enters the new year with Jake Allen, Nico Daws, and David Rittich in net. That doesn’t exactly scream Cup contender, though Jack Hughes did win a Gold Medal with Hellebuyck as his goalie in the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Sportsnet’s Emily Sadler also pointed to Buffalo, San Jose, and Vegas as possible landing spots. Buffalo has been a hot connection all summer.
Vegas is Vegas - they’ve made a habit of finding ways to swing big moves for a decade now. San Jose is interesting too, even with Yaroslav Askarov already there.
Elsewhere on the Flyers front, Samu Tuomaala has signed in the SHL, putting his North American career on pause after being a former second-round pick. Cal Petersen, whose Flyers run ended almost as soon as it started, has signed a PTO with the Washington Capitals. That’s a weird goalie setup on paper, considering Washington already has Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren, both right-catching.
There was also movement on Kevin Hayes, who is headed to the KHL with Ak Bars Kazan. In a press release, GM Marat Valiullin said, "Hayes is a seasoned center who spent 12 seasons in the NHL and played in leading roles on strong teams throughout his career.
We quickly found common ground from the beginning of the negotiations. It was important to us that Hayes wanted to come to the KHL.
We were really drawn to Kevin's desire to play a lot, take responsibility, and win. His goal is to win a trophy with Ak Bars,"
Valiullin added, "We expect Hayes to strengthen our game and help our teammates bring out their best. We have a lot of young guys, and it will be beneficial for them to have a professional with his career and work ethic around them every day. Kevin is used to playing a key role in his teams, and we expect the same from him at Ak Bars."
As for the Flyers themselves, a big move before training camp still doesn’t feel likely. But Alex Nikishin and Simon Edvinsson are two names to keep in mind. Nikishin and Carolina are locked in a standoff, while Detroit, without a GM, is described as a directionless mess right now.
