The Flyers’ preseason keeps taking hits, and Tuesday night brought another one.
Dan Vladar left early against the Bruins with an upper-body injury, cutting short what was supposed to be a planned split in net. Rick Tocchet had said at morning skate that Vladar would handle the first two periods and Aleksei Kolosov would take over for the third, just as Joseph Woll and Carson Bjarnason had divided the workload against the Capitals the night before. That plan never got that far.
Philadelphia announced near the end of the second period that Vladar would not return.
The injury came after Boston had scored and play had stopped, and Vladar was visibly in pain before heading out of the game.
Kolosov stepped in and, at the time of this writing, has stopped all nine shots he’s faced in relief.
The Flyers have now seen two key players go down through four preseason periods, and both injuries have come on plays that didn’t look especially dramatic. On Monday, Denver Barkey exited the club’s first preseason game against Washington with a lower-body injury after taking a hit from Martin Fehervary. Barkey did come back briefly for the start of the second period before leaving for the night.
Brent Flahr said during July’s development camp that Barkey had sat out a scrimmage to manage a hip flexor injury, though it’s not clear whether the new issue is connected.
If Vladar misses time, Kolosov, 24, would be the next man up behind Joseph Woll. Kolosov has two seasons of NHL experience, with a 5-11-1 record, a 3.64 GAA and an .863 save percentage in 21 appearances.
