As the NHL trade deadline fades into the rearview, teams are busy signing prospects as junior leagues and NCAA seasons wrap up. The Philadelphia Flyers are among those teams, inking winger Noah Powell to a three-year entry-level contract, set to kick off next season.
The Flyers announced Wednesday morning that Powell will join the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL) for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. This move gives the organization a closer look at his development.
Powell, 21, was selected by the Flyers in the fifth round of the 2024 draft, 148th overall. His journey since then has been nothing short of intriguing. Drafted as an overager, he earned his spot by leading the USHL in scoring with 43 goals in 61 games for the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
Seeking to climb the developmental ladder, Powell committed to Ohio State University for the 2024-25 season. However, the transition from juniors proved challenging, as he adjusted to the faster pace of college hockey. Despite the struggle, he managed two goals and five points in 17 games, primarily playing a depth role.
Mid-season, Powell switched gears and headed to the OHL’s Oshawa Generals, where he played a middle-six role. He notched nine goals and 22 points in 28 games, standing out as one of the older players at 20.
Powell then took another shot at college hockey, joining Arizona State University in a less competitive conference. Over the season, he scored seven goals and 12 points in 34 games, averaging 13 minutes of ice time. Notably, he increased his shot volume, going from 1.23 shots on goal at Ohio State to 1.59 at ASU, showing more jump in his game.
With the Flyers announcing Powell's stint with the Phantoms, he’ll be on an amateur try-out before his contract officially begins next season. This mirrors the path of Alex Bump, who had a similar experience with the Phantoms last year.
The Phantoms have 16 games left before the playoffs, offering a prime opportunity for Powell to showcase his skills. With Bump’s recent call-up to Philadelphia, Powell's arrival comes at a perfect time as the Phantoms could use a young winger with a knack for shooting.
Powell’s addition, along with David Jiricek, adds excitement for Flyers fans, providing a promising glimpse into the future as the NHL team continues to find its footing.
