The Flyers' 2025-26 season has been a rollercoaster, offering a mix of perspectives depending on how you slice it. Some fans might see a team stuck in the middle, not quite in the running for a top draft pick but also not quite playoff contenders. Others might view them as a rebuilding squad making solid progress under their new head coach.
Despite a rough patch where they dropped 12 of their last 15 games leading up to the Olympic break, the Flyers have managed to keep things lively.
Travis Sanheim reflected on the season, saying, "If you take out that tough stretch of losses, we've shown we can hang with strong teams. We've got a good squad and can win any game."
With six wins in their last eight outings, the Flyers are just five points shy of the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot, with 17 games remaining. As they prepare to face the Blue Jackets, one of their rivals in the standings, they know the Eastern Conference is packed with competition.
Sanheim added, "All we can do is focus on ourselves, play solid hockey, and see where it takes us. The race is tight, but it's all about our performance."
Their recent 3-2 shootout win against the Wild, a top Western Conference team, highlighted their potential. Interestingly, if the Flyers were in the West, they'd have a four-point lead on the second wild-card spot. In the Pacific Division, they'd be just two points out of first place and actually sitting in third due to fewer games played.
Coach Rick Tocchet isn't paying much attention to outside chatter. "The guys have been resilient, winning the last couple of games. Going into Minnesota, many expected a loss," Tocchet noted.
Saturday's game on home ice is another significant opportunity for the Flyers. Tocchet emphasized the importance of each matchup, treating them as playoff games.
"It's crucial for our young players to experience these high-stakes situations. I'm eager to see how we respond," he said.
With a blend of youthful energy and veteran leadership, the Flyers are set on making every game count in their push for the playoffs.
