Flyers Rough Start Has Put Rick Tocchet On The Hot Seat

With Rick Tocchet's tenure with the Flyers in jeopardy, three intriguing coaching prospects could usher in a new era for the team.

Rick Tocchet still has time to steady the Philadelphia Flyers, but the early results are starting to raise questions. After an improbable run to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, the Flyers have opened 0-4-2 in 2026-27, and there’s not much room left to explain it away. With the roster largely unchanged, the scoring from some of the club’s top offensive players has also gone quiet, which only deepens the concern around Tocchet’s fit.

The schedule does ease up after Sunday night’s game against the defending Stanley Cup champions, so this doesn’t have to become a crisis today. But if the slide continues, Philadelphia may have to begin thinking about the next coach. And if that day comes, there are a few names that make sense.

Bruce Cassidy sits near the top of the list. He’s the best head coaching free agent available, even if he spent the offseason working with Paul Bissonnette and the TNT crew after the Vegas Golden Knights blocked him from landing with the Edmonton Oilers.

Cassidy is a Stanley Cup winner with Vegas and came within one win of another title when the Boston Bruins reached Game 7 of the 2019 Final. His reputation as one of the league’s sharpest X’s-and-O’s coaches has been strong for years, and that’s exactly the kind of edge Philadelphia could use.

The only real question is whether Cassidy would view the Flyers as the right landing spot or wait for a better opening.

Jay Woodcroft is another name worth watching, though he may be more of an offseason possibility. He’s currently an assistant with the Anaheim Ducks, and they may not want to part with him in the middle of the season.

Still, Woodcroft remains a respected offensive mind, and he could be especially useful for a young Flyers group that needs another level from its skill players. He was also in the mix for the Toronto Maple Leafs job this offseason, so another head coaching opportunity figures to come around eventually.

If Philadelphia decides to move on from Tocchet, Woodcroft makes plenty of sense if the team can bridge the gap with an interim coach.

Then there’s the chaos option: John Tortorella. If Danny Briere wanted to make the most dramatic move possible after a Tocchet dismissal, bringing Tortorella back would certainly qualify.

The source frames it as the kind of bullpen move Vegas used last season, and it would immediately jolt the room. Whether Tortorella would even be the right answer is its own question, but the possibility is there.

A different name could appeal to the fanbase in a more sentimental way. Craig Berube, a former Flyer, would fit that profile after spending 11 years in the organization, including two seasons as head coach and seven as a player. The idea of Berube returning would carry obvious nostalgia, though unlike Tortorella, he might be looking for more than just a one-year stopgap.

Flyers Early Skid Is Already Raising Bigger Questions About This Roster

Seven games into the season, the Flyers are already facing the kind of early turbulence that can change the conversation around a roster fast. Their latest loss came against the Carolina Hurricanes, extending a rough start that has left Philadelphia searching for any kind of rhythm or consistency while the goals and results keep piling up in the wrong direction.

The numbers have been hard to ignore, with the club struggling to finish chances and get much going on special teams, and coach Rick Tocchet has been blunt about the need for patience and improvement. Players are saying the right things about sticking with it, but the bigger question now is whether this is simply an ugly opening stretch or a sign of deeper problems that this group has to sort out before the hole gets much harder to climb out of. Flyers Frustration With Rick Tocchet Just Reached Another Level

The early-season spiral in Philadelphia kept getting uglier in Raleigh, where the Flyers dropped a 4-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes and saw another lineup experiment go sideways. Prospect defenseman Oliver Bonk was elevated to the top defensive pairing and had a rough night, a move that only added to the sense that the team is searching for answers in real time as the losses pile up and the frustration grows louder.

Rick Tocchets decisions are now under a harsher spotlight because the results have left so little room for patience. With the offense sputtering, the defense unsettled and the group still waiting for a clean response, the Flyers look stuck between development and damage control, and the bigger concern is that the season is already drifting in a direction no one around the team can afford to ignore. Flyers Coaching Speculation Just Got More Frustrating After 0-7 Start

Seven straight losses have put the Flyers in an ugly early-season hole, and the frustration around the team has already started to spill into familiar territory. When a club opens this way, the first place fans often look is behind the bench, and John Tortorellas name has been central to the speculation as Philadelphia searches for any sign of a reset.

For now, though, the noise may be louder than the reality. Reports from Sportsnets Elliotte Friedman suggest a coaching change is not considered likely at this moment, which leaves the Flyers in the awkward spot of being mired near the bottom of the standings without an obvious short-term fix. NHL history has plenty of unusual midseason moves, but this one appears headed toward patience for the time being, with the bigger question centered on how long the team can ride out the slump before something more dramatic becomes unavoidable.
