The Philadelphia Flyers are heading into camp with one of their most interesting experiments already taking shape.
According to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic, Rick Tocchet and his staff are “intrigued” by the idea of pairing Matvei Michkov with Trevor Zegras early in training camp. Kurz said that could happen on the power play, with one of them shifting off the right flank, or in an early practice or preseason game.
“The coaching staff is intrigued by putting Michkov and Trevor Zegras together, and I expect that to be early in camp. That could just be on the power play, meaning one of them will have to move off of the right flank, but expect to see that in an early practice or a preseason game,” writes Kurz.
“I doubt that means Michkov will suddenly be playing 18 minutes per night. His defense and decision-making is still going to be a work in progress.
But, if he’s prepared to do more offensively, he’s going to earn more shifts. Any suggestion otherwise is silly.”
It’s the kind of look that could give the Flyers a real jump before the season even starts. Zegras was one of the team’s top scorers last season, and if the two click, Philadelphia could have two-thirds of a top line in place.
There is some history there already, even if it came in a limited sample. Michkov and Zegras spent just 30 total minutes on the ice together in the same line combination last season. If the chemistry is there this summer, that number should rise quickly.
Michkov enters camp under the microscope for more than just line combinations. He underperformed in his second season with the team, and there were moments when his conditioning came under scrutiny from Tocchet.
Still, there was a big offensive burst after the Olympic break, when Michkov posted 22 points to help push the Flyers back into the playoffs. That stretch was followed by a healthy scratch in the postseason, a reminder that the inconsistency remains part of the conversation.
That’s why this season carries so much weight for the winger. The Flyers still believe he can develop into the kind of top-six scorer they saw as a rookie, but they need that production to show up more regularly.
There’s also a contract layer here. Michkov is in the final year of his three-year entry-level deal, which means this is, in practical terms, a major proving ground. General manager Danny Briere already made it a priority to keep Zegras, goalie Dan Vladar, and defenseman Jamie Drysdale, and he has essentially challenged Michkov to show what he’s worth before any extension talks begin.
If the season goes sideways, that doesn’t automatically send Michkov to free agency. He remains a restricted free agent, and the Flyers would have the option to move him if they decide another team might squeeze more out of him. In that case, Philadelphia could add to its draft stockpile or bring back another player.
