The Flyers wasted no time showing off one of the more intriguing parts of their prospect pipeline on the first day of rookie camp: a defense pairing built around two first-round picks.
Oliver Bonk and Maksim Sokolovskii skated together Friday evening, giving Philadelphia a look at what could become a fascinating tandem down the line. Bonk, a 2023 first-round pick, already has a little NHL seasoning after making his debut and his Stanley Cup playoff debut at the end of last season. Sokolovskii, taken 27th overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, is still just 18 and will spend one more season with London before heading to the NCAA’s University of Maine next year.
The pairing also came with a built-in connection. Both defenders have played for the London Knights, which made the fit feel natural in rookie camp.
"We haven't really decided what the lineup's going to look like tomorrow, so we kind of just put some pairs together of what it would look like. I think Bonk's an incredibly intelligent guy, got a year under his belt playing the pro game.
Soko, he's a young guy coming in. He's massively huge and raw.
Bonk's really good at talking and helping guys through it," Snowden said of the duo.
"They have a little bit of a connection, obviously, they played in London. They understand where they came from. I don't think there was a whole lot of thought process in going behind it, but it was, here's Sokolovskii, let's put Bonk with him, let's help him through this first day and then we'll see what we're going to play with tomorrow."
Bonk, 21, spent three full seasons starring for London, winning the Memorial Cup and finishing as an OHL champion twice. Sokolovskii’s path is still just beginning, but the Flyers clearly see plenty to work with.
The organization’s defense prospects are a different kind of story from its forwards. Up front, Denver Barkey, Alex Bump and Porter Martone are already viewed as established pros for all practical purposes, even if they remain on the rookie camp roster before main training camp begins next week.
On the blue line, the group is much less settled. Ty Murchison enters his second pro season after a year that ended with a season-ending injury in the middle of the campaign. Jackson Edward has some pro experience, but Spencer Gill, Brek Liske, Luke Vlooswyk and Riley Steen do not.
Gill, though, is not exactly starting from scratch. He is just one year younger than Bonk and drew attention at training camp last year, so he brings some familiarity of his own.
For now, the Flyers are testing combinations, and Bonk-Sokolovskii is the one that stood out on day one. The blend is obvious: Sokolovskii’s skating and puck-carrying give him a dynamic edge, while Bonk’s hockey sense makes him the steadying force. Whether the duo stays together is still up in the air, but the upside is easy to see.

Rookie Camp is already in the rearview mirror, and now the roster picture shifts to the veterans, newcomers and prospects who will spend the next stretch trying to carve out a role before the regular season arrives. Travis Konecny, Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras headline the forwards, while Travis Sanheim and David Jiricek give the blue line a mix of experience and upside.
