Flyers Goalie Prospect Takes A Big Step Fans Will Debate

In a pivotal career move, promising Flyers prospect Martin Psohlavec joins the WHL to sharpen his skills and elevate his gameplay.

A new chapter is opening fast for Flyers prospect Martin Psohlavec, and it comes with a major move across the ocean. The 18-year-old goalie has agreed to join the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades next season, giving him a clear landing spot after being drafted by Philadelphia in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Psohlavec, taken by the Flyers in the second round at 62nd overall, was one of two goalies selected by the club last month. He had already been picked by Saskatoon in the first round of the CHL Import Draft earlier this month, a move that hinted a deal could be coming together. Now it’s official, and the Blades are adding a prospect they expect to matter right away.

“Martin was the number one player on our list for the last several months,” said Blades general manager and president, Colin Priestner, via the team’s press release. “Myself and Jeff Harvey have gotten to know him, and he’s just an outstanding kid full of energy and enthusiasm, on top of being a world-class goalie going in the second round at the NHL Draft. Martin really wanted to be in Saskatoon, and we are absolutely thrilled to have him join our club.”

For Psohlavec, the move is a significant jump in competition. He spent most of last season in the Czech U20 league with HC Energie Karlovy Vary, where the 6-foot-5 goalie posted a .928 save percentage and a 1.92 goals against average. Among goalies who appeared in more than 30 games, he finished first in both categories.

The path ahead now looks much different. Instead of continuing in Czechia, Psohlavec is heading to Western Canada and into the WHL, where he should see a much heavier nightly workload against stronger opposition. That kind of test could be exactly what he needs at this stage of his development.

His profile is the kind that turns heads. According to the Elite Propsects 2026 NHL Draft Guide, “Psohlavec’s appeal from the get-go is very simple: he’s big and athletic.

The 6-foot-5 goaltender can jump into a split with strong ease. Possessing good form, he stretches his upper body into saves to further improve his range laterally.

While his size affords him many advantages, Psohlavec always keeps himself square to shooters, displaying a really strong sense of spatial awareness in the crease,”

The guide also noted his puck-moving ability: “He is perhaps one of the most engaged and effective puckmovers in the class, always looking for opportunities to move the puck up ice either after dump-ins or after stops. And he’s made progress in his hand placement, extending his hands further and keeping them engaged to cut off angles.”

Psohlavec doesn’t arrive with the same top-level résumé as some other goalie prospects who’ve spent time in leagues like the SHL, Liiga, KHL, or the top Czech division. Even so, the opportunity in Saskatoon is a big one, and it gives him a chance to take a real step forward in a season that could raise his stock.

Flyers Just Made Their Trevor Zegras Commitment Official

Trevor Zegras arrived in Philadelphia with plenty of intrigue, and his first season with the Flyers gave the organization a pretty clear answer about where he fits in the long term. Acquired from Anaheim last summer, he quickly became one of the most productive players on the roster, setting career highs across the board while handling a versatile top-six role that had him moving between center and wing as the season went on.

The bigger takeaway for the Flyers is how much Zegras mattered when the games got tighter. He played 81 games, led the team in playoff points and delivered the kind of all-around offensive season that made a commitment feel inevitable, even before the front office made it official. For a club trying to build something more stable up front, keeping a player who can drive play in a few different spots is a meaningful piece of the puzzle. [Read more 🡒]

Flyers May Finally Have A Goalie Prospect Fans Can Believe In

For a franchise that has spent years searching for stability in net, Yegor Zavragin is starting to look like more than just another name in the pipeline. The 20-year-old Flyers prospect landed at No. 10 on Scott Wheelers top 20 NHL goalie prospects list, and the buzz is backed by real production overseas, where he handled a brief run with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL and turned in strong numbers in the VHL as well.

The bigger question for Philadelphia is whether that promise can eventually translate into something the organization can actually count on. The Flyers are set to open the upcoming season with Dan Vladar and Joseph Woll as their NHL tandem, but Zavragins rise gives the front office a potential long-term answer if his development keeps moving in the right direction. For a team that has waited a while to feel good about a goalie prospect, that alone is worth watching. [Read more 🡒]

Brieres Boldest Flyers Move Just Raised A Bigger Offseason Question

Daniel Briere has spent the summer trying to show the Flyers are not content with another quiet offseason, and the front office has already made that point in more than one way. Philadelphia has added a few pieces in free agency, but the bigger message came from the aggressive push for Leo Carlsson and the extension for Trevor Zegras, moves that signaled a willingness to be bold rather than merely patient.

What makes the next stretch interesting is that the Flyers still have room to keep working, with cap flexibility left to maneuver and a roster that could still change before the season begins. Briere has made clear the door is open for more if the right opportunity appears, which leaves Philadelphia in a familiar but more intriguing place than usual: active enough to matter, yet still waiting on the move that would tell everyone how far this offseason is really going to go.
