Flyers Get Timely Boost Before Tampa Bay But Two Statuses Loom

In a promising turn for the Flyers, key players Rasmus Ristolainen and Denver Barkey might return to the ice just in time for facing the Lightning.

The Flyers may be getting a lift at just the right time.

Ahead of Monday’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning, there is a chance both Rasmus Ristolainen and Denver Barkey are available, according to Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who is in Tampa Bay for the game. Both players traveled with the team despite their injury concerns.

Barkey hasn’t played since Philadelphia’s preseason opener against the Washington Capitals, when he sustained a lower-body injury. He later aggravated it in a practice before the season opener and opened the year on injured reserve.

Rick Tocchet said Barkey has a “good shot” to play Monday, and if he does, he would line up as a winger.

Ristolainen, meanwhile, left Saturday’s game against the Hurricanes with an undisclosed injury. It appeared to be a problem with his left hand after he blocked a shot, tried to keep going, and eventually had to exit.

Spiegel reported that Ristolainen is a game-time decision, so the Flyers will likely see how he responds in warmups before making the call.

If Barkey is ready to go, the Flyers would need to activate him from injured reserve. The simplest move to clear room would likely be placing Nikita Grebenkin on IR. Grebenkin has not appeared in a game yet after skating in a preseason contest, and he has been out since March 21st of last season with an undisclosed injury.

With a demanding stretch coming up, getting Barkey back and keeping Ristolainen in the lineup would be a welcome boost for Philadelphia.

Flyers Make A Tough Lineup Call As Barkey Returns

Denver Barkey is on track to give the Flyers another look against Tampa Bay, with the young forward expected to make his season debut after working back from a lower-body injury. Rick Tocchet confirmed Barkey is likely to play and pointed to the qualities that make him intriguing for this roster, especially his hockey sense and ability to create offense. It is the kind of return that can quietly shift the feel of a lineup, particularly for a team still sorting out which young pieces are ready for bigger minutes.

The move also comes with a tough decision elsewhere, as Alex Bump is expected to come out of the lineup to make room. For a club trying to balance development with immediate performance, those calls can say plenty about where the staff sees its depth chart right now. Dan Vladar will also be back in goal for his second start of the season, adding another layer to a game that will offer a clearer picture of how the Flyers want to line up as Barkey re-enters the mix. Flyers Linked To A Young Defenseman Worth A Bold Push

Contract talks in Detroit have turned into one of the more closely watched subplot lines of the offseason, and a young defenseman with size and upside is now at the center of it. Philadelphia is among the teams reportedly monitoring the situation, with the kind of blue-line profile that tends to draw attention if it becomes available.

Simon Edvinssons frustration with his contract negotiations has opened the door to the possibility of a move, even as the Red Wings still want to work something out. Seattle and Pittsburgh are also said to be in the mix, which means any team serious about making a push may have to come in aggressively before Detroit is forced to decide whether to keep negotiating or listen more seriously to outside interest. Carl Grundstrom Is Making The Flyers Roster Crunch Even Tougher

Early in the 2026-27 season, Carl Grundstrom has quietly pushed his way into a spot that can matter a lot more than it might have seemed a few weeks ago. His physical edge and relentless forechecking have fit well with Trevor Zegras and Owen Tippett, giving the Flyers a heavier look in a part of the lineup where they have been searching for reliable answers.

For a player who cleared waivers after being put on them Sept. 23, and at a time when Denver Barkey and Nikita Grebenkin were dealing with injuries, Grundstroms rise adds another layer to an already tricky roster picture. The Flyers can use the kind of straightforward, hard-to-play-against minutes he brings, but his continued usefulness also makes the coming personnel decisions a little more complicated than they were supposed to be.
