The Philadelphia Flyers have made it official: forward Riley Thompson is joining their ranks with an entry-level contract set to begin in the 2026-27 season. While the buzz around this signing has been building for days, the Flyers confirmed the move today. Thompson, who wasn't picked in the draft, will finish this season on a professional tryout with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL affiliate, following his third season at Ohio State University.
Standing tall at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 222 pounds, Thompson fits the Flyers' strategy of infusing more size into their prospect pool. The 23-year-old, primarily a center, brings versatility with his left-handed shot.
Whether he remains at center as he transitions to the professional level is yet to be determined. With the Phantoms facing significant roster changes-nine forwards set to hit free agency-the Flyers are clearly gearing up for a youthful overhaul.
During his collegiate career, Thompson racked up an impressive 84 points in 111 games, notching 39 goals and 45 assists. He began his journey at the University of Alaska Anchorage before transferring to Ohio State, where he truly shined as a sophomore.
As a junior, he served as an alternate captain, leading the Buckeyes with 13 goals and 27 points in 37 games. Ohio State made it to the Big 10 Championship game but fell to Michigan, with Thompson contributing four points during the tournament run.
While there are concerns about Thompson's skating, the Flyers have a track record of turning such weaknesses into strengths, as seen with players like Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink. If Thompson can improve his speed, he could become a valuable asset for the Flyers down the road. In the meantime, his addition to the Phantoms brings a blend of size and youth, bolstering their push for the playoffs.
