Shoppers packed Xfinity Mobile Arena in South Philadelphia on Wednesday, chasing the kind of markdowns that turn a routine merch run into a score. The annual summer sale brought fans through the doors looking for Flyers and Sixers gear at prices that dropped as much as 90% off.
Ryan Knarr was among the early arrivals, and he left with a haul that felt like a holiday haul in the middle of July.
"I got a sick throwback sweatshirt for 70% off and another sweatshirt," said Ryan Knarr, a Sixers fan.
He said the sale helped him knock out several items at once.
"I got some nice City Edition pants, got a couple of jerseys for some friends as well, so just unbelievable deals. Really cool that the Sixers do this every year," Knarr said.
The line started forming before the noon opening, and the mood inside was all about finding a bargain. Charles Conway called it exactly what the crowd was hoping for.
"Oh, it's a beautiful thing. A very beautiful thing," said Charles Conway.
For some regulars, the sale has become part of the summer calendar. Cara Ozlek said she likes using it to stock up ahead of the next season.
"Hey, I love getting a good sale and stocking up for the next season coming up," Cara Ozlek said.
Bernie Perlman said he has been making the trip since 2010, and the results keep bringing him back.
"I've been coming since 2010, and I always have good finds here," Bernie Perlman said.
Perlman and Ozlek said the event has turned into a tradition, with both shopping for jerseys, shirts and hats for themselves and friends. Perlman said he even spotted a few items that were especially tempting.
"I found a few baby [Joel] Embiid jerseys, and I have friends that are dying for the black Flyers jerseys, and I might grab a couple more," Perlman said.
Officials say the sale is meant to clear out last year’s merchandise and make room for new items, including jerseys that fans have been waiting for. Conway said there are still a few pieces he wants to see show up.
"I wanted a LeBron jersey and [Jaylen] Brown jersey, but they're not here yet," Conway said.
Georgieann Michels, the vice president of marketing, said those jerseys are expected soon.
"We will be having some of that on hand. We're very excited for that. We hear the fans and we know they are looking for it, and we're excited for the king to be in Philly," said Georgieann Michels, vice president of marketing.
The sale resumes Thursday from noon to 6 p.m.
